Rogers Voice and Data Plans for the iPhone 3GAfter much waiting and anticipation, Canadians can now sink their teeth into some hard data from Rogers on their iPhone 3G pricing plans. All of the new plans are going to require a 3-year contract, and they will include visual voicemail, free evenings and weekends, and unlimited WiFi at all Rogers and Fido hotspots.

Plans are starting at $60/month for 150 minutes of voice and 400MB of data… and top out at $115/month for 800 minutes of voice and up to 2GB of data.

*sigh*, still no unlimited plan for Canadians.

I’m really starting to get sick of the ridiculous data charges up here in Canada. Was really hoping the iPhone would usher in a new, reasonable, ‘unlimited’ data era up here. Guess I’m wrong so far. It’s time for Canadians to bend over and take what Rogers is giving them.

Canadian Government to Hold 2GHz Wireless Auction

On March 17, 2008, in iPhone, by Mr. Mayor

Canadian Government to Hold 2GHz Wireless AuctionThe Canadian government has released a list of bidders in the upcoming wireless auction scheduled to determine the future of Canada’s cell industry. This is of particular interest to me, because of course, I am Canadian (as regular readers know! If you didn’t, now you do!). Big players and smaller newcomers are on the list. The big 3, Bell, Rogers and Telus are all players of course, and are on the list.

The auction is scheduled for May 27th, and will follow the same format used in the US for the 700MHz band… However this one will be for the 2GHz spectrum. It will be the first in Canada to follow an FCC-style auction which will (in the end) grant pieces of the pie to bidders that place the highest bid for a given area.

If some new entrants are winners in the auctions, it could prove to drive down the ridiculous plan prices in Canada. More competition would be a good thing for Canada… We’d see more ‘unlimited’ plans pop up, and hopefully one day soon…the release of the iPhone to Canadians.

iPhone Coming to Canada in January 2008?

On November 9, 2007, in iPhone, by Mr. Mayor

It’s official, er… semi-official… At least from the picture of a brochure we found. The iPhone is finally coming to Canada!

Canadians from coast-to-coast have been waiting for this for a long time to come. The rumors were abounding for months and months only to disappear and never be heard of again.. However, just now some real hard evidence is coming to light, including actual release dates!

According to the picture we found below (Thanks TUAW), the release date for the iPhone in Canada is to be January 18, 2008. So, still a bit of a wait for Canadians (those that didn’t have one shipped up from the US, to unlock it). I sincerely hope this isn’t a photoshopped picture. That would be cruel and wrong for so many reasons.
