Canadians Voice Their Displeasure at RuinediPhone.com

RuinediPhone.com

Are you Canadian? Do you want the iPhone? If you do, there’s a new petition site out there that may interest you.

RuinediPhone.com was recently setup in an effort to collectively say NO THANKS to Rogers/Fido for giving Canadians poor (terrible) data/voice plan options for the new iPhone due out shortly.

You can view the data/voice plans for the iPhone in Canada here.

On July 11th (date of the iPhoen 3G release) the site will be sending a printed copy of all messages and signatures collected on the site in an effort to show all Canadians’ displeasure with Rogers/Fido. There are some really interesting comments on there… and I’m sure the more word gets out about this site, the more that signatures will skyrocket! As I write this the site has just over 25,000 signatures. Not bad…

Rogers to Offer iPhone 3G at $199 and $299 on 3-Year Term

Rogers Set to Offer iPhone 3G to Canadians

The latest in the Canadian iPhone situation is that Rogers Wireless plans to launch the iPhone at the same price points as in the US. $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB. Cool news for Canadians, even though with the strong Canadian dollar we were all probably hoping for a slight break on pricing… (Fat chance, right!?) Don’t get me started on Apple Canada pricing… I’ve been in more than one heated discussion with an Apple employee over the pricing of goods in the Apple Canada store… They simply won’t budge on their pricing despite the strong dollar north of the border. I’ll save that rant for another post.

Back to Rogers…

The big news will be the data plan details when they become available. There is still no word on how Rogers is going to handle this. Canadian carriers are notoriously awful for charging and arm and a leg for data plans… and I’ve been sincerely hoping that the iPhone 3G will help bring down data plan pricing for not only new iPhone users, but for BlackBerry, Treo, and other smartphone users as well. $100-$200/month on data charges is not cool.

Rogers is also planning to plunk new iPhone customers with a 3-year agreement… one more than the standard 2-year agreement AT&T customers in the US have been getting. Not a huge deal, but I suppose if you change your phone often, it might be a bit of a pain going into the Rogers’ store to change up your plan from time to time.

Apple Planning Huge International Launch of iPhone 2.0?

iPhone Going World-wide?It would seem that all signs are pointing to a large international roll-out of the much ballyhooed iPhone 2.0. Why? Let me give you the skinny.

Vodafone confirmed yesterday that it has secured distribution rights for the iPhone in 10 countries… Yes, 10 countries. The countries are: India, Australia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey. I’m particularly happy for the folks in Greece… as one of my digg fans recently pointed me towards this site: www.wewantapplegreece.com. Greece is clearly ‘jonesing’ for the iPhone, as is a large majority of the world.

T-Mobile has recently confirmed that it will introduce the iPhone in Austria, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia and Latin America.

Rogers Communications in Canada also recently confirmed their intent to launch the iPhone in Canada during the 2008 calendar year. Canadians, can I get a w00t!? (pray for reasonably priced data plans)

See how everything appears to be lining up for a huge international launch? I’m glad I’m not in charge of co-ordinating such a thing. However I would think that getting carriers on board in the above countries would not be such a hard task… at least not compared to China.

*smooth segue*

China would be the next monster to tackle. According to our friends at MacRumors and AppleInsider, the latest version of iPhone Software 2.0 has handwriting recognition for Chinese.

Exciting stuff indeed. 2008 is looking more and more to be the year of iPhone Proliferation… er, the year of the International iPhone… um… well you know what I mean.

Rogers Communications Confirms Canadian iPhone Coming This Year

Rogers Announces the iPhone is Coming to Canada in 2008Ok Canadians… can I get a w00t!??? It’s official, Rogers has announced that the iPhone will be coming to Canada this year.

In a brief statement, Rogers Chief Executive Ted Rogers announced:

“We’re thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year. We can’t tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned…”

Now we’re getting somewhere! With Rogers making an announcement like this, we know that they have obviously hammered out enough details with Apple that the release will be before the end of 2008. What should be very interesting to see is the rates that they offer. Data plans are notoriously expensive in Canada in comparison to unlimited plans found in the US. They iPhone could very well help bring down plan prices, not only for iPhone users, but hopefully for BlackBerry and other smartphone devices as well. I know there will be a collective thank you nationwide from all Canadians if the iPhone does indeed have a positive effect on data plan pricing. Lets hope for the best.

More Canadian iPhone Rumors: iPhone Coming to Rogers This Summer

iPhone Coming to Canada on Rogers This Summer?More rumors surrounding the iPhone in Canada have surfaced today, and this time it’s the Toronto Star that is fueling the rumor mill. In a report today, the Toronto Star is claiming that the iPhone could be in Canada some time this summer, between May and July.

Rumor has it that Rogers Communications (the only Canadian carrier with a compatible GSM network to accomodate iPhone) wants to include the iPhone as a part of a summer campaign featuring touch-screen phones.

The speculated release would put the iPhone in Canada right around the same time the new 3G iPhone is expected to drop. Could be great timing.

Said Elizabeth Hamilton, a Rogers spokesperson:

“We believe it is a phenomenal device and we look forward to being able to offer it to our customers if and when the device becomes available in Canada…”

Now that still sounds a little iffy and grey to me Elizabeth! C’mon, spill the beans to us would ya? I’m not surprised at the tight-lipped answer at all. I actually stopped a Rogers store out of curiosity few days back with some prodding questions about the iPhone. The 2 gentlemen at the store refused to answer any questions or give any help! I was actually kind of shocked because I’ve heard many stories of Rogers’ employees being very accommodating! ‘We don’t support the iPhone and I can’t help you with that’ was the exact response to one of my questions. I kind of chuckled and left it at that. Clearly I wasn’t going to get anywhere with them :)

I’ve heard and read so many rumors about the iPhone coming to Canada, I really don’t know what to believe anymore. All I know is that as time goes by, the release is inevitable, and one of these days the rumor is going to be true.
