The Beatles Coming to iTunes?

MacRumors is reporting on recent speculation of the Beatles finally coming to iTunes. Recent reports are suggesting that this year’s music event will be held on September 9th, the same day that a Beatles version of the Rock Band video game would be released for all major game consoles. Shortly after that announcement, news came that the entire Beatles collection would be released on CD, on September 9th.

Is that an iPhone with -gasp- a Beatles Album Cover on it?

Is that an iPhone with -gasp- a Beatles Album Cover on it?

This timing has lead to speculation that the Beatles collection may finally be coming to iTunes. There is no recent evidence that EMI, Apple Corps (The Beatles holding company), or Apple Inc, have reached an agreement, or that a deal is imminent.

These “Beatles on iTunes” rumors have intermittently reared their head ever since Apple launched the iTunes Music Store six years ago. After the long battle with Apple Corps over the use of the “Apple” trademark in the music industry finally ended in 2007, there have been many rumors of the Beatles catalog coming to iTunes.

In my opinion this is just a coincidence. Matter of fact, it is not known for sure when Apple plans to hold their media event.

GarageBand, Powerful Indeed

GarageBand was first introduced in the 2004 Macworld Keynote, where the whole app was explained, so if you are a recent mac user you might not be aware about the true power GarageBand has. Here is a list of all the main features it has:

  1. Has more than 50 software instruments.
  2. You have piano, guitar, horns, drums, and more, which you get to play with your keyboard. And something really cool about this is that all the guitar tracks can work as an amp with different effects when plugging in your guitar.

  3. Over 1,000 professional audio loops (way more if you buy Jam Packs).
  4. This one is really cool, if you don’t have time to make each instrument’s track, you can just insert loops of really nice instruments into your project.

  5. You have total control.
  6. You can control the volume of all the instruments, mute them if you need to concentrate in a single track, drag and drop almost everything, copy and paste, edit each track with the Track Editor, etc.

  7. You can use your guitar, midi keyboard, microphone, and guitar hero or rock band controllers to live record.
  8. All you need to do is plug your instrument to your mac, and something that is not officially supported by Apple, but a really cool thing to do is to use your Guitar Hero or Rock Band controllers to play tracks, all you need is to download some software and drivers (which don’t take long to set up and all) and you are ready to go. So you can use your mac pretty much as an amp plus being able to record and then export your project into iTunes.

  9. Make professional Podcasts.
  10. I guess this one is pretty much straight-forward.

  11. You can learn to play guitar and piano.
  12. I’m pretty sure you already know about this one, since it’s the latest feature of GarageBand. You can download lessons from talented artists for a fair price, and have a great learning experience, I would recommend you to see it yourself by visiting Apple’s GarageBand site.

So there you go, go ahead and try to make a trance song, some rock, or just good old jazz. I’m pretty sure you can find a tutorial for almost any genre online, YouTube has good videos showing how to create awesome stuff.

Sony BMG to Offer DRM-Free Music on iTunes

Currently the majority of music available to purchase on iTunes is DRM protected. Apple have created a technology called ‘FairPlay’ which is built in to iTunes, QuickTime, iPod, iPhone, etc and prevents music purchased in the iTunes Store from being played on unauthorized computers and devices.

However 9to5Mac believe Sony BMG are soon to begin offering music in the ‘iTunes Plus’ format, which is of a higher quality and DRM-free. iTunes first started selling the ‘Plus’ format with music from EMI in May 2007 and any music purchased in this format should be compatible with any of your devices.

If the rumor is true, it will leave Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group as the only major labels not to offer DRM-free music through the iTunes Store. It is believed the new agreement with Sony BMG will be announced at the Macworld Expo in January 2009.

Apple’s Bid for Myspace Music

According to Macworld, Apple, Amazon and Real are competing to provide the infrastructure for the soon to launched MySpace Music store.

Although a decision is yet to be made, Amazon is said to be at the front of the pack.

MySpace Music will offer music from three major record labels, Sony BMG, Warner and Universal. The service is expected to make its bow in September. In addition to sales of DRM-free music, MySpace Music will likely also offer ring tones, concert tickets, merchandise and other memorabilia. The company seems prepared to work with a partner on the online music retail side, and the partner must be prepared to offer music from unsigned acts.

DRM-free music and unsigned acts aren’t really Apples thing, have to wait and see how this one works out.
