Jonathan Ive Wins MDA AwardApple designer Jonathan Ive has just won another award to place on his mantle. The man behind the design of almost every AppleĀ  ‘blockbuster smash hit’ (in Arnold Schwarzenegger voice) won the MDA Personal Achievement Award on July 1st.

Judges comments: “This year the MDA personal achievement award winner is Jonathan Ive for his design of the Apple IPhone and its user interface. The physical design of the IPhone and its intuitive user interface has completely redefined the mobile phone as we know it. The IPhone is arguably the most talked about consumer-electronics device that has hit the market in the last 5 years. Ive has designed the best implementation of a touch UI, this with the Safari web browser has definitely pushed mobile content into the forefront of the consumer consciousness. It sets the bar very high for all present and future competitors and as such, is shaking the mobile phone industry. We look forward to seeing Ive’s design innovation continuing to challenge the mobile world.”

The MDA’s are awards given out each year from the Mobile Data Association in recognition of companies and individuals in the UK that have made an ‘outstanding contribution to the uptake and success of mobile data over the last 12 months’.

Congratulations to Jonathan for this one. Well done.

P.S. I’m still pulling for Mr. Ive to take the helm for Apple down the road…

Fun Stuff

Is WALL-E a Mac?The new motion picture ‘WALL-E’ is out in theaters today, and I’ve read a few reports that ‘WALL-E’ is a mac. When he boots up, there’s the ever familiar Mac ‘dong’… or is it ‘ding’… or is it more of a ‘hummm’…. You know what I mean. So hard to put into words :)

Also, Senior Vice President of Industrial Design Jonathan Ive is said to have consulted on the design of WALL-E’s love interest in the movie ‘EVE’… and WALL-E himself is said to carry around a clunky first gen iPod.

One shouldn’t be surprised if there are many design cues reminiscent of Mac design. Steve Jobs owns 7% of Disney stock, and sits on their board of directors (Disney owns Pixar). Naturally I’m sure he has some pull.

At any rate, thought this was a bit interesting. If any of you out there go check out the movie be sure to leave comments here on what you saw. Can you confirm or deny that WALL-E is a mac!? :)

Rumors

We’ve all heard the failing health rumors surrounding Steve Jobs… and who knows for sure what is true or not… But one thing is for sure, it has got a lot of people in the mac blogosphere speculating about who would be the successor to Mr. Jobs’ post should something very unfortunate happen in his health.

The folks over at arstechnica put together the graphic below detailing Apple execs and other higher-ups that are most likely to succeed his ‘Steveness’. Take a look:

Who Will Succeed Steve Jobs at Apple?

One would have to assume the favorite at the moment would be Timothy D. Cook who ran the company for a bit back in 2004 (during Jobs’ original health scare). Cook is a young 47, and is responsible for Apple’s worldwide sales and operations, in other words… the COO of the company.

My personal pick would be Jonathan Ive. The guy is a genius and acts as Senior Vice President of Industrial Design at Apple… And lets face it… One of the major things that sets Apple apart from the competition is its clean design… and much of it is due to the work of Ive.

Another thing I like about him is he isn’t a stiff in a suit (and no I’m not suggesting that the other execs ARE). I don’t think Apple wants their figurehead to be a numbers, CFO, supply chain management kinda guy. I mean, c’mon, look at Jobs over the past years. Black shirt, jeans and sneakers… But I digress…

If Mr. Ive can provide the passion and ‘Rah! Rah!’ attitude that Jobs’ has exuded for many years, he could be an excellent choice.

What do you think?

Jonathan Ive Set to Replace Steve Jobs as Apple CEO?Apple’s senior vice-president of industrial design is rumored to be the next in-line for Steve Jobs’…. Job.

Jonathan Ive has long been credited with the design of everything mac for the past many years. His accomplishments are many, not bad for a guy that apparently started out designing toilets and combs!

Just some of the products Ive has designed:

The Original iMac, iBook, MacBook, PowerBook G4, MacBook Pro, eMac, Mac mini, Xserve, Xserve RAID, Mac Pro, Power Mac G3, G4, Power Mac G4 Cube, G5, the Newton, iPod, iPhone, Airport base station, and Cinema displays…Not a bad resume!?
