iPhone

Apple has fought back at jailbreakers the only way they can at the moment, really. They’ve figured out a way to program iTunes 8 to detect and prevent the Pwnage exploit. Consider this a warning for all of you jailbreakers out there. If u’re running a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch, it’s probably a good idea to hold off on the 2.1 firmware update that was released the other day.

The iPhone Dev Team has reacted to this development already by saying:

‘The nice thing about iTunes decisions is that we can provide you with patches to counter them. We have one such patch already for Mac iTunes 8 for iPod touch. We’ll be working out the full suite of patches for all the combinations over the next week.’

Hold on to your britches jailbreakers, looks like help is on the way. You can read more at the iPhone Dev Team blog.

How To's, iTunes

Built-in to the new iTunes 8 is the brand-spanking new ‘Genius Sidebar‘. The goal of this new feature is to guide you to related and suggested titles in the iTunes Store. If you ask me, this idea is a bloody brilliant idea by Apple. What a great way to get more and more people back into the iTunes store, spending more of their time, and money there.

Take the screenshot below (click for a larger image) from my own iTunes music library. I have the ‘Fine Young Cannibals’ selected (I’ve got quite an eclectic music selection… leave me alone!). You’ll notice that the Genius Sidebar not only points out other FYC songs that I can purchase or preview, but it also denotes other related music that I might find compliments the song real well. In other words ‘You like THIS? Here’s more of THIS.’… ‘and People that bought THIS, also bought THIS’. Brilliant.

iTunes

Sure enough, late last night when I returned to my office, I had a software updated bouncing at me. I opened it up, and iTunes 8 was ready for me to install. ‘Great’ I thought… I was wondering how long it would take for this update to arrive. It was only 5 or 6 hours since the Apple event earlier in the day… So all in all not that bad… and I did do an Apple > Software Update… a few times to see if I could grab the new iTunes, but to no avail.

At any rate the install went quick and I had to reboot my system. Upon restart I quickly opened iTunes 8. First thing I was greeted with was the new album view of my music. I could see all of the album artwork, right there in front of my face. A slider at the top right let me adjust the size of the artwork from small to large. Kind of cool, I thought. (more…)

Apple News, iTunes

The lights are off, all of the reporters and live-bloggers have gone home to hunch in front of their laptops… So that can only mean one thing… It’s time for a roundup of today’s ‘Let’s Rock’ Event! If you’re big into music, movies and any sort of digital download for that matter, chances are you’ll want to take note of the new iPod’s and iTunes 8. Let’s get started…

Of the less-important news, the iPod Shuffle now comes in 4 colors… And Apple is also now selling in-ear headphones with in-line volume control. They look purty nice, but I think I’ll hold off on purchasing them for now. They go for $79. (more…)

Rumors, iTunes

Kevin Rose has once again spoon fed the world rumors about the Apple Let’s Rock Event next week.

At the forefront of Rose’s latest round of rumors is iTunes 8 and it’s features. Rose has said iTunes 8 will have a Grid view, new visualizer with “trippy” new designs one of which he described as “planet like objects wrapping around each other with stars/light streams.” HD TV programs, and most impressive a new “Genius playlist” that will analyze the characteristics of that song and generate a playlist with similar songs. This is all speculation of course and can’t be proven until Mr. Jobs shows us on stage September 9th.

What do you think we will see at the Let’s Rock Event? Leave a comment, and let us know!
