Apple’s New iPod Touch-Based EasyPay Checkout Systems

Gary Allen of ifoAppleStore via AppleInsider gives us a sneak peek of Apple’s new iPod touch- based EasyPay checkout systems that they will soon be utilizing in their retail stores. You may remember that last week we reported on rumors that Apple was dropping it’s Windows CE based EasyPay systems in favor of an custom solution. These new EasyPay iPod touches were expected within two weeks, but have obviously shown up earlier than expected.

Now to the good stuff; here’s how these things work. The iPod itself is encased in a removable shell that houses the magstripe reader for credit cards, a barcode scanner for scanning products, and a rechargeable battery to power the extra hardware.

All Credit Card transactions will be handled on the device, and customers will sign the device with a stylus. Debit card customers will have to scan their cards and enter their PINs at separate terminals sprinkled throughout the store. Cash transactions will be handled on the EasyPay device within the next six months in select retail stores. Retail employees will be able to electronically open cash drawers located throughout the store via the device to complete the sales transactions.

Also, it is being reported that iPhone purchases and activation will be handled with this new checkout system. Customers will be able to select their calling plan, add-ons, and allow customers to read and sign their contracts that are required to complete the transaction.

Lastly, this new system will allow retail workers to perform such customer services as returns, product serial numbers, customer email addresses, credit card numbers, purchase records, and creating a credit for customer accounts.

iPhone OS Has 40% of Global Smartphone Ad Requests

Advertising firm AdMob has released its August 2009 Mobile Metrics Report showing that iPhone OS holds 40% of all mobile ad requests on it’s network during the month of August, up 33% from six months ago. This in conjunction with dropping Symbian OS market share, has put iPhone OS in the #1 for global ad request market share.

The study also notes that iPhone was the top platform to generate ad traffic. Here is the chart:

When the iPod touch is included in this list, it ranks second behind iPhone. Of course, the iPod touch isn’t a mobile phone, but is included in the report because it runs iPhone OS, and can access mobile content.

Why does AdMob’s numbers matter? Well, it turns out they are the world’s largest mobile ad network supplying ads to 9,000 mobile Web sites and 3,000 applications.

More Photos of Next-Gen iPod Cases Surface

Engadget has posted images claiming to be of third-party cases for the next-gen iPods expected to be announced at next Wednesday’s media event. These cases are reportedly being exhibited in Berlin at the IFA electronics convention.

What’s so different about these cases? Glad you asked. These cases have holes in the back to accommodate the cameras rumored to be built into the next-gen iPods. If you remember, we’ve seen something like this before. One new development however, is a larger cutout to accommodate the screen on the iPod nano cases.

To sum everything up, these cases suggest the next-gen iPod touch and nano will have cameras. The nano may even have a larger screen.

Possible Next-Gen iPod Touch Images Surface

MacRumors is reporting on an image they had received earlier in the week. The image depicts an iPod touch with a similar looking body as current iPod Touches, except it has a built-in camera in the top-center. Although this image is convincing, some questioned it’s authenticity because of blurring around the supposed built-in camera.

MacRumors goes on to say that the same source for this image has since handed over a series of teardown images to the Covino & Rich blog. The blog goes on to post several bullet points of information regarding the images.

  • to show it?s real. If you look at the board, it states Apple 2009 very clear. The 2nd gen AKA iPod touch out now, has 2008 on it. They haven?t revised the 2008 touch. I will compare them in pic in a sec.
  • BTW, these phones NEVER leave Apple and this one left but it was a durability test phone, so that?s why the screen is all gridded off and cracked.
  • The side by side picture is the inside of the current gen vs the 3rd gen (one coming out in September).
  • I acquired this from a guy that I buy parts phones and iPods from. I believe he?s a recycler in ***********, so what most likely happened is that Apple threw this away and he some how got it and sold it for parts.
These are some of the best images I’ve ever seen of a rumored product. The camera placement falls in line with other evidence regarding built-in cameras coming to the iPod Touch next month. These images are clear and high quality. In short, I believe these images are real. That said, they may only be a prototype and may not represent the final product that is expected to be introduced next month.
UPDATE: Now there is a video. This almost confirms this rumor for me.

Next-Gen iPod Touch to Have Built-in Camera and Mic?

Wired.com is claiming that the next-gen iPod Touch will feature a built-in video camera and microphone.

Here’s an excerpt:

A well-connected source tells us those rumors are on the money, and that Apple?s factories in China are already manufacturing iPod Touch models with integrated cameras and microphones. An Apple spokesman declined to comment when reached by phone.

The current iPod Touch models can utilize a microphone, but an external accessory is required. The inclusion of a built-in microphone would essentially make the iPod Touch a Wi-Fi mobile phone.
I almost buy the camera bit of this rumor. As you may recall, there have been previous rumors suggesting that next-gen Touches and Nanos will have a built-in camera. That said, I don’t believe there will be a microphone included in the new Touch. The main reason being that this would further dissolve the separation between the iPhone and iPod Touch product lines. I don’t believe Apple wants to eat into their iPhone profits with an iPhone wannabe.

iPod Touch To Get Camera, Projector?

There is mounting evidence of a new iPod Touch that will include a camera (possible video capabilities). The first wave of evidence is a flurry of “leaked” third-party cases for the upcoming iPod Touch (also one for an iPod Nano). They all have one thing in common, a hole for a camera. If this sounds familiar, there was a rumor going around in May that suggest iPods would get cameras.

At least two of the case designs have the camera centrally mounted, adding to the credibility of this rumor.

Next up, there is a rumor of the next-gen iPod Touch (and iPhone) having a Micro Projector built in. DigiTimes first reported that a Taiwanese company named Foxlink is currently developing micro projectors for use in mobile phones, and Apple is expected to launch devices with built-in projectors later this year. Here’s an excerpt:

International brand vendors, including Nokia, Samsung Electronics and Apple, reportedly all plan to launch handsets with built-in micro projectors by the end of this year, indicated the sources, adding that Foxlink is likely to benefit from the emerging trend due to its strong business relationships with Nokia and Apple.

Lastly to round the whole thing out, PinchMedia announced that they have started to come across several iPod Touches with the “iPod 3,1″ version number in their analytics reporting from App Store applications.

Here are the details:

  • the first time an application using Pinch Analytics was run by a iPod3,1? device occurred in late April 2009;
  • The applications being run on iPod 3,1? devices have all been the larger, more popular applications using Pinch Analytics, with hundreds of thousands to millions of unique users other than their size, the applications have little else in common.
  • As of this date, a few dozen distinct iPod 3,1? devices have run around two dozen different applications using Pinch Analytics;
  • applications using Pinch Analytics were run by iPod 3,1? devices very infrequently until late May 2009, when the pace picked up slightly;

The “iPod 3,1″ (current version number is 2,1) version number has shown up on our radar once before back during the beta stages of the iPhone 3.0 software. This finding strongly suggests that there will be an iPod Touch refresh in September.

My thoughts? I’m starting to buy into the rumor of cameras being built into the new iPods, and I certainly don’t scoff at the idea like I did a few months ago. Stick this one in the maybe pile.

I strongly doubt Apple will include a micro projector in next-gen iPods and iPhones. It sounds amazing, however, I do not believe the technology is currently capable of being crammed into an ultra thin iPod Touch, and Apple certainly won’t make there product ugly and bulky for an technology in it’s infancy.

In short, I expect a new iPod Touch in September, possibly with a built-in camera. I don’t expect a micro projector to be included. Not yet anyway.

3.0 User Adoption Mixed

Admob released a report earlier in the week that revealed 44% of iPhone traffic throught their ad network on June 20th, came from an iPhone running the recently released 3.0 software.

Tapbots released numbers of their own, showing adoption rates over a longer period of time (starting prior to WWDC), for the iPhone 3.0 software on the iPhone to sit at about 75%.

On the same day and the same network only 1% of iPod Touch traffic came from a device running the 3.0 software. The update costs $9.95 and most of the new features included in the iPhone 3.0 software are geared toward iPhone hardware, features like MMS and tethering.

Tapbots places iPod Touch customers using 3.0 at little more than 50%. Lower than the iPhone numbers but considerably higher than admobs numbers.

The only thing we can safely conclude from this is that iPod Touch owners simply aren’t updating to 3.0 as fast as iPhone owners.

This doesn’t surprise me, people don’t want to pay for something everyone else is getting for free. Apple originally charged $19.99 for the 1.1.3 update back in January 2008. People complained and Apple dropped the price to $9.95 for the 2.0 release last summer. They again charged $9.95 for the 3.0 update this year.

The reason Apple does this is for accounting purposes. iPhones are subscription based products and thus follow one set of accounting rules. Rules that don’t require Apple to charge for the update. As for the iPod Touch, it is a stand alone product, it follows a different set of accounting rules and thus an amount is required to be charged for the update. However, the amount Apple charges is strictly up to them.

802.11n Wireless Headed for Third Generation iPod touch? iPhone?

Once again, smarter people than I, have been digging around in the iPhone 3.0 beta firmare and have found references to a new chip enabling low power 802.11n that’s bound for Apple’s next generation iPod touch. This means there’s a pretty good chance it will make it to the next iPhone as well.

The Broadcom chip that supplies WiFi and Bluetooth on current iPhone and iPod touch models is numbered BCM4325. The resource files for iPod touch has a new placeholder for a chip numbered BCM4329. The upgrade adds support for 802.11n features, which means the ability to find and join 5GHz networks.

This sounds like a logical step. The previous two generations of both the iPhone and iPod touch have only had the rapidly aging 802.11a and 802.11b/g wireless internet capabilities built in, while most of Apple’s products have had 802.11n built in for some time now. My guess for the exclusion of 802.11n standard would be power consumtion, and with these new chips supposedly being “low power” they would fixt that problem.

Ohio Woman Sues Apple Over Fiery iPod Touch

In a claim (pdf) filed in the UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF OHIO  WESTERN DIVISION an Ohio woman Lynette Antrobus file a civil suit against Apple claiming that her son’s iPod Touch caused second degree burns when it caught fire in his pocket at school.

According to the claim he  “heard a loud pop and immediately felt a burning sensation on his leg.”

The iPod in question was purchased November 17, 2008 from a store in ohio, the suit also includes 10 unnamed store employees.

The incident happened on Dec. 4, 2008 and the suit is asking for $75K in damages, $75K or more in punitive damages and an additional $75K for special damages claiming the following:

“As a direct and proximate result of Defendant Apple Computer, Inc. and/ John Doe 1-10’s wrongful acts or omissions, negligence, gross negligence, recklessness, wanton and willful disregard for the safety of their business invitees, customers, and/or patrons like Plaintiffs as described above, Plaintiff A. V. has, in addition to the losses and damages aforedescribed, experienced pain, suffering, scarring, disability, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of the usual activities of daily life, and a loss of income and the ability to earn income in the future permanently for the rest of his life.”

Now i think this is just a bit over the top. Over at familydoctor.org a second degree burn is described as “Thicker burns, called second-degree burns, have blisters and are painful. The skin is very red or splotchy, and it may swell a lot.”  Additionally the time to heal is said to be “Second-degree burns usually heal in 2 to 3 weeks.”

That hardly seems to me like a life long injury causing a loss of the ability to earn income. We will have to wait this one out to see what a jury thinks.

More Rumors of a “Premium” Section in App Store

In an article by Wired, comes more rumors and speculation of a “Premium” section of the App Store. This new division of the App Store would house the more expensive ($ 20 USD and up) and presumably better iPhone apps, particularly games.

The App Store has seen a downward trend in price in hopes of still selling apps against the $1 and junk apps the store is innundated with. With this new “Premium” section of the store, more serious developers that do this as more than just a hobby will hopefully be lured in.

This is rumored to be announced at this Tuesdays special iPhone event, a rumored special event held just for this, or of course, WWDC.
