More Photos of Next-Gen iPod Cases Surface

Engadget has posted images claiming to be of third-party cases for the next-gen iPods expected to be announced at next Wednesday’s media event. These cases are reportedly being exhibited in Berlin at the IFA electronics convention.

What’s so different about these cases? Glad you asked. These cases have holes in the back to accommodate the cameras rumored to be built into the next-gen iPods. If you remember, we’ve seen something like this before. One new development however, is a larger cutout to accommodate the screen on the iPod nano cases.

To sum everything up, these cases suggest the next-gen iPod touch and nano will have cameras. The nano may even have a larger screen.

Apple Recalls First-Gen iPod Nanos in South Korea

The Korea Herald is reporting, that Apple, after much pressure from the South Korean government, agreed to recall all (originally Apple offered to only replace defective Nanos) 155,000 first generation iPod Nanos sold there. These devices were sold from October of 2005 to December 2006. The reason for the recall? There have been four reported cases of the Nano’s battery catching fire. Here’s an excerpt:

With a series of media reports following the report of The Korea Herald, Apple said it would replace the batteries and shells of its first-generation iPod Nano with new ones.

“Customers who are concerned about possible overheating of the battery can get it exchanged,” Park In-kyu, an official with the Korea Agency for Technology & Standards, told The Korea Herald, citing a document sent by Apple Korea on July 7.

This reminds me of Japan’s iPod Nano recall in August of last year.

iPod Touch To Get Camera, Projector?

There is mounting evidence of a new iPod Touch that will include a camera (possible video capabilities). The first wave of evidence is a flurry of “leaked” third-party cases for the upcoming iPod Touch (also one for an iPod Nano). They all have one thing in common, a hole for a camera. If this sounds familiar, there was a rumor going around in May that suggest iPods would get cameras.

At least two of the case designs have the camera centrally mounted, adding to the credibility of this rumor.

Next up, there is a rumor of the next-gen iPod Touch (and iPhone) having a Micro Projector built in. DigiTimes first reported that a Taiwanese company named Foxlink is currently developing micro projectors for use in mobile phones, and Apple is expected to launch devices with built-in projectors later this year. Here’s an excerpt:

International brand vendors, including Nokia, Samsung Electronics and Apple, reportedly all plan to launch handsets with built-in micro projectors by the end of this year, indicated the sources, adding that Foxlink is likely to benefit from the emerging trend due to its strong business relationships with Nokia and Apple.

Lastly to round the whole thing out, PinchMedia announced that they have started to come across several iPod Touches with the “iPod 3,1″ version number in their analytics reporting from App Store applications.

Here are the details:

  • the first time an application using Pinch Analytics was run by a iPod3,1? device occurred in late April 2009;
  • The applications being run on iPod 3,1? devices have all been the larger, more popular applications using Pinch Analytics, with hundreds of thousands to millions of unique users other than their size, the applications have little else in common.
  • As of this date, a few dozen distinct iPod 3,1? devices have run around two dozen different applications using Pinch Analytics;
  • applications using Pinch Analytics were run by iPod 3,1? devices very infrequently until late May 2009, when the pace picked up slightly;

The “iPod 3,1″ (current version number is 2,1) version number has shown up on our radar once before back during the beta stages of the iPhone 3.0 software. This finding strongly suggests that there will be an iPod Touch refresh in September.

My thoughts? I’m starting to buy into the rumor of cameras being built into the new iPods, and I certainly don’t scoff at the idea like I did a few months ago. Stick this one in the maybe pile.

I strongly doubt Apple will include a micro projector in next-gen iPods and iPhones. It sounds amazing, however, I do not believe the technology is currently capable of being crammed into an ultra thin iPod Touch, and Apple certainly won’t make there product ugly and bulky for an technology in it’s infancy.

In short, I expect a new iPod Touch in September, possibly with a built-in camera. I don’t expect a micro projector to be included. Not yet anyway.

Artists Rendition of the Next-Gen iPod Nano

Here is an artists rendition of the next iPod Nano courtesy of iLounge.

iLounge goes on to say the new iPhon will have a wider screen , smaller click wheel, and the previously mentioned camera on the back.

The larger screen and smaller click wheel sound like reasonable possibilities to me, the camera does not.

I’m trying to look at this from Apple’s point of view. Are iPod sales faltering so badly they need to add a significant new hardware feature that will add to expense and little else? Are they trying to keep ahead of the competition somehow?

I guess my point is, is there a good reason to add a camera?

Nike+ Finally Gets Me Off My Butt… And On the Road!

You might remember my post from back in August, where I finally got off my butt and purchased a pair of Nike+ shoes. Well, it’s taken me another month, but I finally got out of my office chair to go for a run today at lunch… and I have to say, I enjoyed it.

The Nike+ kind of made it fun. While I’m only familiar with the basics of the Nike+ system so far, it kept track of my pace, distance and time, and I checked this often during my run. I managed to cover 4km today, and felt pretty darn good when I got back to the office here to get back to work.

When I returned I simply plugged my nano into my MacBook Pro, and all of my run data was automatically uploaded to the Nike+ site, where I can view, manage and analyse my runs… Plus do all sorts of other cool things.

My question for you all is this. Would anyone be interested in starting up a Mactropolis.com Nike+ Running Group? It would be mighty easy for us to start up a new forum in our forums, and it would be a great way for all of us to get up and get active…and support each other. I’ve had enough of this sitting behind a desk… A nice run or jog (pronounced ‘yog’… kidding) goes a long way for all of us. What do you say? Who wants to join me?

iFixit Disassembles iPod Touch and iPod Nano

Barely a day out of the factory and iFixit has already posted photos of the disassembly of the new iPod Touch and iPod nanos introduced yesterday at the Apple “Let’s Rock” Event.

There was nothing overly breathtaking in the nano. However the iPod Touch has a Bluetooth chip in it. The most likely explanation for this chip is that it transmits the Nike+iPod information even though Nike+iPod is said to use a 2.4GHz low band protocol that is specifically stated by Apple not to be Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. There is speculation this Bluetooth chip could be used with a Bluetooth headset. There are also five wires leading from the headphone jack instead of four that were in the previous generation iPod Touch. This could mean the rumors of external microphone support are true.

Let’s Rock Event Roundup

The lights are off, all of the reporters and live-bloggers have gone home to hunch in front of their laptops… So that can only mean one thing… It’s time for a roundup of today’s ‘Let’s Rock’ Event! If you’re big into music, movies and any sort of digital download for that matter, chances are you’ll want to take note of the new iPod’s and iTunes 8. Let’s get started…

Of the less-important news, the iPod Shuffle now comes in 4 colors… And Apple is also now selling in-ear headphones with in-line volume control. They look purty nice, but I think I’ll hold off on purchasing them for now. They go for $79. [Read more...]

Apple Updating Products Soon?

This time every year the rumor mill starts cranking out predictions of the iPod product line refresh, and this year is no exception. The iPod Nano and iPod Touch are expected to see updates. In addition to the iPod line up refresh it is expected that Apple will update it’s MacBook and MacBook Pro Product lines with new Aluminum cases with a tapered design. These are certainly exciting times, and I can’t wait to see what happens.

What do you predict? Leave a comment and let us know!

Leaked Macbook Pro Ad! September 9th Launch?

If your a regular in our forums you might have seen the so-called new Macbook Pro advertisement that has been circulating the internet. Well, sure enough its a fake, created by MacRumors forum member. But, for what its worth it is a pretty good fake. The ‘fake’ Macbook Pro features an aluminum case, MacBook Air-style backlit black plastic keyboard, tapered edges and a thinner design. It could actually be very close to the final Macbook Pro Apple churns out. Ah but, what will be under the hood I hear you ask? Well.. You’ll just have to take that up with Mr Jobs because we have absolutely no idea.

In other news; it seems that all sources are pointing to September 9th for Apple to launch their new product line. Will it be the iPod Nano 4th-gen, Macbook Pro or a Macbook Touch (iTablet)? Who knows, neither the date or the product is confirmed or denied by Apple. I’m guessing we’ll just have to wait this one out guys…

In the mean time though, head to the rumor mill in our forum to discuss possible products, dates and specs.

Leaked Photos: 4th-gen iPod Nano?

Kevin Rose founder of Digg and Pownce has fueled the current Apple rumor speculation in stating that we will see a huge overhaul in hardware and software updates over the next 2 – 3 weeks. Rose has not only suggested that we will see a completely new iPod Nano (resembling the stylistic features of the Macbook Air) but we will could also see iTouch updates, iPhone firmware updates, current iPod price drops & the new iTunes 8. Wow, big promises Mr Rose! Lets see how close your predictions are this time…
