Apple has finally released it’s long-mentioned MobileMe iDisk App [iTunes Link]. Since WWDC this past June, users have been patiently waiting for the release of this app, which allows users with a MobileMe account to access their iDisk data on their iPhone or iPod Touch.
Features:
- View files on your iDisk
- Access Public folders
- Easily share files from your iPhone
- Quickly access recently viewed files
- View iPhone-supported file types-including iWork, Office, PDF, QuickTime and more. (Files larger than 20MB may not be viewable.)
This app requires a MobileMe subscription to function, and an iPhone or iPod touch with the iPhone 3.0 software installed. Apple has even released a video overview of the app.
Tuaw is reporting that a technical note briefly appeared on Apple’s support page, the subject of which was “removing the iDisk app from your iPhone/iPod touch”. Whoa. Wait. iDisk app?
This article gives us no new information of the application’s features, in fact the only thing it does do is suggests that the app exists in a lab somewhere at Apple and not just on a slide at WWDC. We’ll have to wait and see, but a prematurely released webpage is normally a pretty good sign that Apple is preparing to release something.

I reviewed Phases 2.0 a few months ago. Since then, my friends at bjango have released Phases 3.0 which brings some new features to the table.
The most notable new feature is a new page of detailed information about the moon (and a little about the sun). The information displayed on this page is as follows: age, illumination, distance, azimuth, and altitude. This same page also displays the current phase of the moon as well as moonrise, moonset, sunrise, and sunset.
You can toggle to any date in the past or future with the arrows located on either side of the date. In case the date you are looking for is more than a few days in either direction, you can tap on the calender icon located in the upper right corner, and up comes a date selection tool. From here it is much easier to find a distant date compared to the toggle buttons. Once at your selected date, Phases displays all of the data that would be available for the current date. All of this works without a data connection, meaning iPod Touch users can use this while away from a wifi hotspot, say, gazing at the night sky.
As with the last version, the first page displays the current phase of the moon, along with the next 8 major moon phases and their corresponding dates.
The last page is a calendar that shows all of the phases of the moon for that month, with the current day highlighted in blue. As with the stats page, you can toggle to any time in the past or future.
These pages, as far as I can tell, have remained largely untouched from the previous versions. That’s not to say that they needed changing. It’s hard to improve upon perfection.
Lastly, there have been some minor updates to Phases’ settings. You can now choose to display distances in miles, and select what hemisphere you are in, which improves moon displays for customers who live in the southern hemisphere. Oh, and you can set your exact location, for more precise results.
Just like before (and with all bjango apps), the user interface is bright, and well thought out. The navigation scheme is very similar to the iPhone’s built-in weather app, meaning this app should be easy to navigate, or at least familiar feeling, from the very first use. Also, what few buttons that are used, feel very natural and are perfectly designed to fit in with the rest of the cool colors used throughout the app.
Granted this app appeals to a fairly niche audience, it is so well polished it should be mandatory for all iPhone owners. If you haven’t already, you can pick up a copy of Phases from the App Store for $.99. I highly recommend it. [iTunes Link]
That’s right.. If you haven’t noticed yet, PayPal has arrived for the iPhone!
If you haven’t used PayPal before, it’s a service that lets you send and receive money securely online. It is the payment method of choice on eBay… which is perhaps why eBay bought PayPal some time ago!
The PayPal app allows you to send money using your existing account. Punch in the amount, and the account you want to send it to, and PayPal does the rest. You can choose from 16 different currencies and login using your existing account PIN or password.
At any time if you wonder what your balance is, you can login to your PayPal account with this app and check your balance. Handy stuff.
The application is stunningly easy to use, and it’s free. So if you use PayPal a lot, this is a must have.

Golfers get ready for a new tool that will be VERY useful for your game. Released last week comes GreenFinder from Itinerant Software.
GreenFinder gives you accurate distances to the front, middle and back of each green you encounter on the course. Using the built-in GPS on your iPhone, GreenFinder provides you with distances you need to avoid the trouble and hit accurate shots. It also shows you how far it is to hazards and traps off the tee.
You can use the app for search for courses near you… and already over 3,000 courses are available with more being added all the time.
The only concern I have with the app, actually has nothing to do with the app at all. But unless you can grab a cart and play a fast 18, chances are you’ll drain your iPhone battery before you can finish out your 18. Perhaps I’m wrong, but I can see battery life as the only issue here. GPS puts a tad more demand on battery reserves!
Well worth the price at $34.99 when compared to other handheld GPS rangefinders out there.

Are you into space, astrology, and all that kind of junk? If you are (I have to admit, I have a telescope myself) then you’ll want to check out the Starmap app from Frederic Descamps.
Starmap is ‘the ideal stargazing companion’. With it, you can find constellations you’re looking for, planets, shooting star zones and more. In a nutshell it’s a complete planetarium in the palm of your hand!
All planet and constellation info is available in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. Two-thumbs up for the multilingual support in this one.
Starmap contains complete info on the following:
- 120,00 visible stars
- 200 main stars with names and more details
- 150 galaxies and nebulae
Cool Features:
- Get your viewpoint automatically with the help of the accelerometer
- Adjust the sky and stars brightness on your screen to match your actual viewing conditions
- Comes complete with full coordinates for all celestial bodies
- Pinch and zoom into charts like you do with photos!
This is a great app for any stargazer. At $11.99 it might be a tad on the pricy side for the casual observer… But needless to say it’s a solid app.
