Newest iPhone 3GS Ad Shows Off Video Editing

Apple has begun airing a third new ad in their iPhone 3GS series. This spot highlights how easy it is to shoot, trim and send video on the new device.

The whole ad is based around filming a skater, editing the crash landing, and finally sending the footage to someone via email, all on the iPhone 3GS. You can watch the ad in it’s entirety here.

I thought it was a good ad, but certainly not Apple’s best. I’m no marketing expert though.

Users Experiencing iPhone 3GS Overheating and Discoloration

It appears that beginning last week, Nowhere Else (Google Translation) started receiving reports of pink or brown discoloration from white iPhone 3GS owners. The cause? Excessive overheating where the battery cell is located.

At first it appeared that Apple did know of the problem, as there is an Apple support document on preventing overheating. However, it appears the document is many months old, and has been updated to include the iPhone 3GS in name only.

Apple’s support document does point out several situations that can lead to activation of the temperature warning screen.

  • Leaving the device in a car on a hot day.
  • Leaving it in direct sunlight for extended amounts of time.
  • Using certain applications in hot conditions or direct sunlight for long periods of time, such as GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day or listening to music while in direct sunlight.

As of yet there has been no official word from Apple on the matter. So if you think you have an affected device keep a look out for discoloration, and stay tuned as Apple may address this issue in the future. Hopefully they will.

Apple Releases Two new Ads for iPhone 3GS

Apple has posted two ads on their site late this evening. Both ads follow a similar scheme as the iPhone 3G ads, except these now have a different tune playing in the background.

The first ad, advertises the copy and paste feature. Starting by copying a phone number to a text and ending with the copying of a map to an email. Needless to say, this feature isn’t exclusive to the iPhone 3GS and comes with the iPhone 3.0 software. I find it odd that Apple would even try to use this as a selling point.

The second ad shows off voice control. They start the ad by asking the phone to call Dave Taylor. Then they ask “Play songs by Jack Johnson”. Voice control is actually an iPhone 3GS exclusive feature, and this ad does a great job of showing you what you can do with it in a 30 seconds.

You can find the ads here and here.

YouTube Mobile Uploads Up 400% since iPhone 3GS Launch

Google announced today that mobile uploads (meaning uploads coming directly from mobile devices) to YouTube have seen a 400% increase since June 19. That date of course coincides with the release of the iPhone 3GS which supports mobile uploading to YouTube.

Google also notes that there has been a 1700% increase in uploads over the past six months. You can read the full announcement here.

This proves to me that Apple is dedicated to making their products “just work”. I would guess the increase in uploads wouldn’t be nearly as dramatic if the user experience wasn’t so seamless.

iPhone 3GS Unlock a Step Closer?

Notanothermacblog.com is reporting that George Hotz (aka “GeoHot”), a 19-year old hacker, has possibly found a way to unlock the iPhone 3GS.

Currently, details are far and few between, however Hotz has posted an the following image in a blog showing a command entered inot the device’s iboot showing that the “signature checks” had been bypassed.

This is gibberish to me since I’m not a programmer. So if your in the same boat as me, the nut of this story is this: Hackers have gotten close to “unlocking” the iPhone 3GS to be used on unsupported carriers, and the device hasn’t even been on store shelves a full week.

You can check out the full story here. Once again my thanks to Killian Bell for bringing this story to my attention.

Over 1 Million iPhone 3GS Models Sold

Apple today announced that they have sold over 1 Million iPhone 3GS models this past launch weekend. Today’s press release even has a quote from Steve Jobs:

“Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.”

Steve Jobs CEO of Apple has been on sick-leave since January and is due back at the end of this month. This is the first time he has been publicly quoted since taking leave.

If you remember the same number of iPhones were sold last year at the iPhone 3G launch. Along with that amazing sales figures comes the astonishing fact that six million Apple customers have downloaded the new 3.0 software that runs on all pre-exsisting iPhones and iPod Touches (all 40 million of them).

iPhone 3G S Features

Looks like there are some secret features that Apple left out during the WWDC keynote. My personal favorite is Tethering – you can now Bluetooth or USB tether an iPhone (3Gs or 3g, anythign with OS 3.0) to your computer. Also coming to OS 3.0 (and the 3G series of iPhones, not 2G), is A2DP, finally stereo bluetooth headsets.

I’m pretty excited, and looks like I may finally stop whining about how awful the iPhone is and just get one. Although, lets admit it – as with any Apple product, the 3rd version is the one we’ve wanted since revision 1. Looks like the tried and true, wait til the third version, proves true yet again.

Apple is holding onto the 8GB iPhone 3G (my guess is to deplete inventory) it will sell for $99.

It also looks like there is no “upgrade pricing” from AT&T for current iPhone 3G owners.
