Fun Stuff, Videos

Fresh off the press is this crazy video. Looks like everyone is going iPhone crazy down in NYC. Check out the video below, where first in line David Yoo emerges from the store, iPhone 3G in hand. I especially like the part where he thanks his mother for everything. Good grief Charlie Brown.

Contests

I’ve been a little slack over the past day or so on the post front. Partly because I’ve been away from the office, and partly because I’m prepping for the big drawing for 2 brand-new iPhones.

If you haven’t entered the contest yet, click here to enter before it’s too late. Cut-off for entries is 12:01AM CST on July 11. (Just after midnight tonight!)

I’m thinking it’s going to be a long night… setting up for the official drawing with everyone’s name entered into the drawing according to the number of times they’ve posted up to the cut-off date… I’m doing the drawing ‘old-school’… Will draw winning names out of some sort of container (haven’t figured that out yet) and will cut up all paper ballots… And YES, it will be on video :) Whew, this is going to be some work :) But worth it!

A final good luck and THANK YOU to everyone that has entered… And again, if you haven’t entered yet, click here for more details.

Apple News, iPhone

AppleInsider has reported that Apple has snubbed Rogers Wireless for dumping ridiculous service plans on potential Canadian iPhone 3G customers. Apple has decided to pull iPhones from its Canadian retail stores to help the carrier market the new device to customers.

Canadian Apple Retail stores will therefore NOT be selling the new iPhone this Friday Apple has commented. It will be entirely up to Rogers and Fido to pick up subscribers and sell the 3G all on their lonesome.

Calls to Canadian Apple Retails stores confirmed these details, although it was confirmed that demo units will be available at retail outlets come Friday.

The fallout continues against Rogers and their proposed pricing structure. Something has got to give…C’mon Rogers… adjust your pricing to fall in-line with our American friends and we’ll hug this one out.

Apple News, iPhone

One of the more anticipated questions to be answered in recent weeks was “When are the Apple stores opening for the launch of the new 3G phone?”  Well, wait no more.

Apple.com has released a photo on the site that says the new iPhone will be available at 8am local time July 11th. Apple has followed the same pattern as their US wireless service AT&T to help with the long lines and lengthy in-store activation process.

AppleInsider.com has a compiled list of all the memos and price lists that have been sent out over the course of the announcement of the 3G phone until now, so check it out if you would like.

Can we trust this? As I recall Apple is notorious for putting up ads that advertise one thing, and then when news breaks about it, that picture is gone for good.

Two examples for you: When the iPod Touch was released buyers speculated that there would be Bluetooth capability.  They even posted a picture on the UK Apple site that showed the Bluetooth icon, but was there Bluetooth? No, there wasn’t.

More recently Apple released a picture on the Australian Apple site saying the the App Store and 2.0 firmware update would be released June 27th instead of the much anticipated July 11th.  I, for one, believe this announcement, even though you can’t find the picture on Apple’s site, I still believe it.  I assume that having had a credit check done, it will take at least 30 minutes per customer to actually get the iPhone set up and ready to go.  So I think Apple is making a smart move to be open this early, to help with the super long lines that will form.

I wish all those in line, Happy Waiting.

Fun Stuff, iPhone

Lines Forming Outside NYC Cube Store for the iPhone 3GYou can’t make stuff like this up. Seems that a small-ish group of people have started camping outside of the NYC Cube store in an effort to break the Guinness World Record for ‘waiting in line to buy something’… Sounds a little obscure to me, and I don’t even know if that’s an established record… but there you have it. At any rate, it looks like a group of about 10 or so people started waiting back on July 4th in anticipation of the new iPhone 3G. Once Friday rolls around, they will have been waiting for one week. Insane.

If there are any readers from NYC out there, I would LOVE it if you could get me some pictures, video or even an interview with these folks. I’d be happy to have a little phone interview with ‘em :) Those crazy kids…

All of the new plans are going to require a 3-year contract, and they will include visual voicemail, free evenings and weekends, and unlimited WiFi at all Rogers and Fido hotspots.

Plans are starting at $60/month for 150 minutes of voice and 400MB of data… and top out at $115/month for 800 minutes of voice and up to 2GB of data.

*sigh*, still no unlimited plan for Canadians.

Additional Data 50¢ per MB for the first 60 MB, 3¢ per MB thereafter

Rogers will also be offering 2 voice ‘value packs’ with popular features. The $15 value pack includes caller ID, Who Called, Caller Ring Trax, 2,500 Sent Text Messages and 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes. The $20 value pack will include Caller ID, Who Called, Caller Ring Trax, 10,000 Sent Text Messages, 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes and 6PM early evening calling.

I’m really starting to get sick of the ridiculous data charges up here in Canada. Was really hoping the iPhone would usher in a new, reasonable, ‘unlimited’ data era up here. Guess I’m wrong so far. It’s time for Canadians to bend over and take what Rogers is giving them.
