iPhone

Pwnage Tool for Mac OS X PublishedFollowing some delays, the iPhone Dev Team has now published the Mac OS X edition of the PwnageTool. This tool is a hacking program for the iPhone that can unlock devices for third-party carriers and jailbreak them for native apps.

An interesting point here is that because the PwnageTool can execute unsigned code, it will apparently be able to function with any future iPhone firmware. So what does that mean you say? Well, it means you can start syncing your iPhone with the latest firmware via iTunes. The norm with iPhone hacking tools has been that once the firmware is upgraded, you can’t sync your device with iTunes unless you want your phone locked up again. I know, I’ve experienced this a few times after unlocking my iPhone with ZiPhone.

The Mac PwnageTool is a free 23MB download. Get it here. A Windows version is being tested and should be available within the next 24 hours.

Rumors

Confirmed: Malcor 'Hacks' a Hoax!Hadley Stern over at Apple Matters made this interesting post today in which he admits the Malcor hack of his site was a hoax… as part of a publicity stunt.

Says Hadley: “I made a mistake of judging the inpact of this hoax. Apple Matters runs on the incredibly perfect platform Expression Engine and is hosted by Engine hosting, which is a fantastic company. When I was first approached me about the hoax I thought it was a little harmless fun. I am literally shaking right now because I did not fully understand the impact of this, so lesson learnt. Again, Apple Matters, running on expression engine was in no way hacked. It was a joke publicity stunt that I thought would be funny to attract attention.”

Update: Read this blog post from ExpressionEngine and EngineHosting regarding the hoax. (A few of the sites ‘affected’ in this host used ExpressionEngine CMS and EngineHosting which were both in no way a part of this hoax.)

How To: Hack the iPod Touch

By Mike Bradbrook

How to: Hack the iPod TouchIt can take some frustration to get the iPod Touch hack working, particularly if you’ve upgraded iTunes to 7.5 and have already got your iPod Touch at firmware version 1.1.2. This link to Crunch Gear goes through the high-level steps but I thought some might want a little more guidance. If you do, read on…

Note: I can only confirm this works on Intel Macs. PPC Macs are still not fully supported. If you needed another reason to buy a new Mac, you now have one! Also, this is done at your own risk so don’t come crying to me if your iPod is bricked (this is very unlikely to happen though)

In Love With the iPod Touch

I’m based in the UK and so I’ve only recently been able to try the iPhone. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it and would have bought one… If it weren’t for these points:

1. The contract prices in the UK are a joke: £35 (over $70) a month only gets you 200 minutes and 200 texts. That is so lousy that I’d need to go for the mid-range £45 ($90+) per month option that gives 600 minutes and 500 texts. That would be £35 per month more than the £10 ($20) per month I am paying for my current Wi-Fi Nokia cellphone contract.
