Second beta of iPhone 3.0 Software Released to Developers

Apple released to developers today, a second version of the iPhone SDK and OS, along with a statement promising the gradual opening of it’s live push notifications system, and in-app purchasing to developers.

This second version comes only two weeks after the first vrsion of the 3.0 software was announced. This build (7A259) has knocked out bugs reported by developers while increasing the speed of the software.

Apple has stated MMS and tethering are supported in beta 2, but have asked developers not to use them. Which makes no sense.

If you’re a developer you can get the new beta here.

UPDATE: MacRumors is reporting users can now have 11 pages of apps on there iPhone or iPod touch instead of the current 9 pages. That brings the total up to 180 applications from the current 148 limit.

Firefox 3.1 (Beta 2) for Mac Boasts Multi-Touch Support

The new 3.2, beta 2, of Firefox for Mac takes advantage of the multi-touch gestures available on recent MacBooks. Users of Safari will know finger gestures are already present in this browser and can be used to navigate backwards and forwards through previously visited pages, and pinch and push to increase or decrease text sizes. The new Firefox is to include all these gestures, plus some more — twisting clockwise and anti-clockwise on the trackpad will cycle through your open tabs.

Firefox is one of the most popular web browsers available and I for one will welcome the multi-touch gesture support. On my Mac, the broswer I use most is Safari, however I do use Firefox for some things, including posting to Mactropolis. Being used to Safari, I often find myself trying to use finger gestures within Firefox and I get frustrated when they don’t work.

Other improvements in this version include:

  • “private browsing” mode
  • faster JavaScript engine
  • improved rendering

Mozilla, the creators of Firefox, have warned that the Beta 2 of Firefox is intending for testing only. At present, there is no word on when Firefox 3.1 will officially become available.

Podcast Downloads in Firmware 2.2

Podcast downloads enabled in iTunes

Podcast downloads enabled in iTunes

Since the iPhone 2.2 firmware has been seeded to developers, several leaks have surfaced that have given us some things to look forward to with the new software release. We recently posted an article that contained details on Google Street View, but we now have something else to get us that little bit more excited — podcast downloads!

German blog Schimanke.com has published pictures that show the new firmware downloading podcasts within iTunes on the iPhone. Over-the-air podcasts are something many users have been looking forward to, me included. I often find I’m not in the mood for music and fancy a good podcast, but chances are the ones I have on my iPhone I’ve listened to already, so the ability to download new podcasts on the device itself, I think, is a great feature.

It seems we have a lot to look forward to in the next update however, we are still yet to hear anything about the background push notification service that Apple promised in September. The service is designed to alert the user of various things without the need to have the an application running. For example, if you currently receive a message in Facebook, unless you have specific applications open, you would be unaware — but with the push notification feature, it’s possible you can be alerted of a new message without having the application running.

Apple seeded the Beta 2 of firmware 2.2 to developers in October, however we are yet to hear when the update will be released.

iPhone Firmware 2.2 Includes Google Street View

The guys over at MacRumors have today reported that the new iPhone 2.2 firmware will include full Google Street View. The 2.2 firmware, currently in Beta 2, has today been seeded to developers.

MacRumors had previously reported that the Beta 1 of 2.2 firmware included the APIs for Street View, however it was not enabled.

Other seed notes also indicate that ‘line-in’ audio accessories are now supported in the SDK.
