Photographs of the Jackling House and Other Sites

Macnn has a great article featuring photos (taken by MacMagazine) of Steve Jobs’ famous Jackling House he aims to demolish.

As you may or may not know Jobs recently won the rights to demolish the historic home and build over it.

Here are some of photos of the Jackling house:

Even more images, including images of the garage Apple was founded in, can be found on MacMagazine (Google translation).

Apple Plans to Remodel 100 of Their Retail Stores

In an interview with USA Today, Apple SVP of retail Ron Johnson said yesterday that Apple is planning to remodel 100 of their stores.

Not much is said about the redesign itself. However, he does say the display tables will allow room for twice as many Macs. The Genius Bar will also grow, allowing 50% more room for customer support.

Along with the remodeling comes changes to Apple’s “One to One” program. Starting June 2 Apple will limit sign-ups to people who buy new Mac computers at Apple Stores or via its website. The sessions will now last three hours instead of one.

Apple Opens Developer Forums for Snow Leopard Discussion

Apple has now opened forums up to developer for dicussion of Snow Leopard. This is a complete turn-around for Apple, who has tired to keep developers under NDA in regards to Snow Leopard. However, it appears the forums won’t be available to the general public, or student developers, only the Premier and Select developer programs get access.

Apple Has Released Four New “Get a Mac” Ads

Apple has released four new “Get a Mac” ads this evening on there site, and they should air shortly.

The first entittled “Biohazard Suit” has PC standing in a, you guessed it, Biohazard suit talking about virusis, in particular alluding to the Conflicker virus.

Next in line is “Legal Copy”, in this ad, every time PC “lies” about the ease of use of PC’s the legal disclosure (fine print)  at the bottom of the screen grows. I thought it was funny.

Next up is “Stacks” here PC is sorting through stacks of photos one by one looking for someone in a picture. Then Mac goes on to explain that in the new iPhoto you can search for faces in your photos via iPhoto ’09’s “Faces” feature.

Lastly is “Time Traveler” where in PC travels into the future to see if PC’s are still plagued with there current problems. Upon arriving PC meats his future self and asks this very question only to have his future self freeze answering his question. I found this one funny as well.

These new ads are well timed to counter Microsoft’s current “Laptop Hunters” ad campaign. However, instead of attacking them head on with facts, they are hitting them with something Microsoft has never had, tasteful humor.  Oddly, they don’t seem to defend themselves from what Microsoft is accusing them of. Steep prices.

Apple Fires Back at Microsoft’s “Laptop Hunters” Ad Campaign

In an article by Erik Hesseldahl of BusinessWeek, Bill Evans, an Apple spokesperson is quoted as saying “A PC is no bargain when it doesn’t do what you want.”

The article which disected the differences between the $699 HP notebook Microsoft recommended to its TV audience over Apple’s 17″ MacBook Pro, which is like trying to compare Apples and Oranges (ZING). Continuing, Mr Evans also stated “The one thing that both Apple and Microsoft can agree on is that everyone thinks the Mac is cool,” Evans added. “With its great designs and advanced software, nothing matches it at any price.”

The well thought out article goes on to deeply analyze the price differences of the two notebooks and hidden costs. So instead of me listing all of it, you can read a great dissection of the article here.

Counting Down: One Billion App Downloads

Apple is holding a sweepstakes for it’s next iTunes milestone- one billion app downloads.

Entry is simple, every time you download an app either via iTunes on Mac or PC, or on an iPhone/iPod touch you are entered. You can also enter the sweepstakes by filling out this page. You can enter up to 25 times a day. The contest begins today and ends when the one billionth app is downloaded.

The prize you ask? Over $13,000 in Apple products which includes: a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro.That’s a nice prize if I do say so myself.

The app store is apparently seeing a massive boom in daily downloads (guessed to be around five-million downloads a day), because Apple just surpassed the half billion download mark this past January.

When I heard about this, I immediatly remembered a similar sweepstakes Apple held when appraching it’s one-billionth song download back in 2006. Prior to that they held a sweepstakes for the one hundredth-million song download in 2004. All of these contests have had similar prizes, as to the one being offered now.

You can visit Apple’s offical sweepstakes page for more details and a chance to enter.

U2 leaves Apple for Blackberry

U2's special edition iPod

We all know how strict Apple is with the design of their products. Remember when Apple released a special “U2 edition iPod Video”? Well, you will never see one again because U2 has left Apple for Research In Motion’s Blackberries. This came about when U2 approached Apple to design some new products for them. Apple rejected U2, leading the band to switch to RIM (Research In Motion). RIM would allow U2 to have more of a direct say in the final outcome of the product.

“[RIM] is going to give us what Apple wouldn’t — access to their labs and their people so we can do something really spectacular,” Bono said.

Nothing has been announced yet as far as new Blackberry models go. Apple had created the special edition U2 iPods from 2004 to 2006. RIM is not known for allowing others to create a specific design for their products, but re more willing than Apple. I would keep an eye out on RIM to create more products that are competing for the top spot in the smartphone industry.

Slip-up Confirms Nehalem Xserve Launch Imminent

Apple’s Hong Kong Xserve product page earlier this evening showed a broken graphic with alt text saying “Pre-order the new Xserve with Intel Xeon (Nehalem)”. This misstep all but confirms the imminent announcement, if not release, of new Xserves.

This comes just days after rumors of an imminent release of new Xserves.

The link on the page has since been remeoved, but you can read the full story here.

Apple wants patent for extra safe car navigation

AppleInsider found a patent of Apple, which describes a navigation system for in the car. The system is focused on the safety of the driver, so that fewer accidents may occur while driving. Normally you have to control a navigation device by pushing buttons. In this situation it is necessary to get your eyes of the road for a moment, so accidents may arise. That is how the patent describes it. This kind of system can detect that you are controlling the device and warns the driver.

But when a passenger controls the device, the warning is actually useless. Apple has come with a smarter system with touchscreen-navigation. A touchscreen isn’t quite easy to control while driving, but there comes more with that. For example speach input for asking directions for a route. It can be a seperate device like an iPhone or a device that is fixed in the car. The device can also communicate with certain sensors ( both wireless and wired). Those sensors are connected to the wheels, the steering wheel, the engine or GPS. When there is no passenger in the car, certain functions can be blocked.
