More rumors surrounding the iPhone in Canada have surfaced today, and this time it’s the Toronto Star that is fueling the rumor mill. In a report today, the Toronto Star is claiming that the iPhone could be in Canada some time this summer, between May and July.
Rumor has it that Rogers Communications (the only Canadian carrier with a compatible GSM network to accomodate iPhone) wants to include the iPhone as a part of a summer campaign featuring touch-screen phones.
The speculated release would put the iPhone in Canada right around the same time the new 3G iPhone is expected to drop. Could be great timing.
Said Elizabeth Hamilton, a Rogers spokesperson:
“We believe it is a phenomenal device and we look forward to being able to offer it to our customers if and when the device becomes available in Canada…”
Now that still sounds a little iffy and grey to me Elizabeth! C’mon, spill the beans to us would ya? I’m not surprised at the tight-lipped answer at all. I actually stopped a Rogers store out of curiosity few days back with some prodding questions about the iPhone. The 2 gentlemen at the store refused to answer any questions or give any help! I was actually kind of shocked because I’ve heard many stories of Rogers’ employees being very accommodating! ‘We don’t support the iPhone and I can’t help you with that’ was the exact response to one of my questions. I kind of chuckled and left it at that. Clearly I wasn’t going to get anywhere with them
I’ve heard and read so many rumors about the iPhone coming to Canada, I really don’t know what to believe anymore. All I know is that as time goes by, the release is inevitable, and one of these days the rumor is going to be true.
Well wouldn’t you know it, the rumors weren’t true on this one. I kind of had a feeling it wasn’t the 3G… and I think most of us would agree with that.
If you don’t recall, a while back we reported pictures of a rumored 3G iPhone that had surfaced. The pictures looked sketchy and details were dodgy at best, so we filed it under unsubstantiated rumors at the time.
T-Mobile has cut the price of the iPhone in Germany from €399 to only €99 (for the 8GB model). Surely this is to clear out stock with the impending release of the 3G iPhone coming soon? This price cut went up on the T-Mobile website last Friday…to get the price you’d need to sign a 2-year contract.
This deal is running from April 7th through June 30th. June 30th you say??? Hmmm… With all of the rumors seemingly pointing at an early June release of the 3G iPhone this would line up nicely. 3G comes out at the beginning of June, and for those that want to still purchase a cheaper, older gen iPhone they still can till the end of the month. Makes sense to me, but who knows if that will happen! I suppose I will be more convinced once I see other Apple stores around the world doing the same thing… Especially the U.S.
Big things coming in June for the iPhone for sure! 3G iPhone, Firmware 2.0 perhaps… App store anyone? We’ll just have to hold onto our hats (or old iPhones) and see what happens.

Analysts have been himming and hawing over the release date of the 3G iPhone for some time now… and you know how far we can trust those guys… However, when Walt Mossberg puts his butt on the line and mentions in a video that the 3G iPhone will be here within 60-days, he’s probably right. Why? Well first off there is already a lot of supporting evidence out there including AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega commenting:
“Let me repeat what I said: I think that you’re going to see our integrated devices be 3G devices in the not-too-distant future, and I mean months. That should be clear enough”.
That would put us into early June. An early June arrival for the 3G iPhone would be good!
But to carry on… New releases inevitably land in Walt’s lap before anyone else outside of Apple. He’s got the inside line and track record to prove it.
So… What I’m saying is ‘don’t believe the hype’… But chances are, the hype is real this time around Cautiously optimistic we’ll call it!? I also wouldn’t be surprised at all to see the new iPhone Firmware (2.0) to launch on the 3G iPhone.

Not sure if I believe this one or not, but BGR has posted a supposed picture of the new 3G iPhone (well, the back of the device anyway). The back has a glossy black finish, and looks to be made of a plastic of sorts. Also note on this picture the ‘8GB’ marking on the back. Strange… What do YOU think? Real or fake?
