Software Reviews

BOOM From Factor SoftwareAfter installing BOOM and running the game, I immediately thought of the old Bomberman games for the vintage NES systems I used to play. It definately has that look and feel of the 8-bit console.

Factor software describes the game as ‘Bomberman meets Doom’… and I think they’ve got it right on. The look and gameplay is almost exactly like Bomberman, while the enemies within the game have a ‘Doom’ feel to them.

The controls are simple. Use the arrow keys to navigate around the screen and collect the coins. You can blow up blocks and enemies using the ‘ctrl’ key to place bombs. Unlike Bomberman however, you can place as many bombs as you can right out of the gate. In the original Bomberman games you would start only being able to place one bomb at a time. Not in this one. So be careful about placing too many bombs too quick, you may get stuck and blow yourself up!

Overall the gameplay is fun. If you’re into vintage gaming (and I am) you will enjoy this title.

Some more features found within BOOM:

  • 8 soundtracks to choose from
  • 1 or simultaneous 2 player gameplay
  • 80 levels
  • 10 types of enemy characters
  • Post your high-scores online

If you’re into vintage or ‘puzzle’ type games, than you’ll probably enjoy BOOM. The hybrid Bomberman/Doom game can get addictive for sure! The first time I played it, before I knew it a good half hour had passed!

If you’d like to try the demo or purchase this game ($15 USD), visit the official BOOM page here.

My God, the hours upon hours I must’ve spent playing the hell outta this game back when it was new (and I was young).

Despite the number of WEEKS me and my friend spent playing this game, we never grew tired of it (and we never got past level 31 or so!).

Fun for ALL ages, one of the very best games ever made - with it’s simple yet so fun gameplay… This game PROVES that the raw power of computers/games nowadays isn’t a scratch on the classics from the past, where it was all about the game. Although for it’s day the graphics were pretty swanky (and are timeless, so they don’t look bad even these days) and the music is something else. I didn’t realise until just now that 10 years on i can still sing the tune of the first few levels.

One critism - not out for PC so I can’t enjoy it on my laptop… But back to my old iMac for a couple of levels methinks!
