Is the MacBook Air Really a Seminole Computer?

Yesterday Brooke Crothers over at Crave reported that she considers the MacBook Air a seminal computer…That’s certainly one heck of a powerful statement! She then proceeded to back up her claim and provide 5 reasons why. They are:

  1. Very thin, very light but comparatively fast.
Sure. For the size, the MBA does pack a lot of punch into that small frame.
  2. Solid state drive (SSD): The SSD is revolutionary.
She calls it ‘one of the most useful hardware improvements to a notebook computer since the active-matrix color liquid crystal display’.
  3. Sturdy. For a sub-one-inch-thin notebook, it feels remarkably solid.
I can’t argue with this one. The machine is solid indeed.
  4. Battery life.
Brooke argues that she has compared the Air battery life vs. other PC notebooks and the Air beats them all hands down.
  5. Looks.
Ok, you got me there again Brooke. The MBA is a great looking machine for sure.

So what’s your take? Is the MacBook Air simply Revolutionary or just an overpriced gizmo that under performs?

I completely disagree. I’ve put a MBA to use, and quite honestly, it doesn’t cut it… for me.

I can see it being useful for my mom, but I’d never own one myself. Given one, I’d sell it and buy a juiced out MacBook.

That would make more sense wouldn’t it? Thanks Mark :)

It’s an excellent computer for people who want light weight and don’t need a lot pf power (for video editing and such). It makes the wrong compromises for me. I use FireWire external hard drives, which won’t work with the Air, and I want SMALL and don’t care about thin. I would prefer a screen size between 7-10 inches. Not being able to carry and swap in a second battery is an insane decision for a travel laptop.

The Macbook Air in combination with a SuperDrive probably taters to the needs of a lot more people than it is given credit for.
Firewire ? Only macheads are prown to owning devices that need firewire, most home users do not even know what it is and use USB.
Ethernet ? Normal home users do not have ethernet networks and have no clue what this one is either.
Battery not replaceable ? Most of us will have it plugged in the wall 90% of the time.
HD speed ? Put the stuff that needs to be fast on a USB key ! It’s probably the stuff you need to be able to access quickly on your faster primary system anyway so the right place IS a USB key.
