Last January, Axiotron promised a Mac-based tablet. It’s been a while, but it seems as though they are going to deliver on their promise… this January. According to a reseller, the ModBook will begin shipping on January 8th.
Some key features of the Axiotron Modbook:
- WAAS enabled GPS
- ForceGlass Screen & Camera Cover
- WACOM Penabled Digitizer
- Axiotron Digitizer Pen
- Full touch-screen capabilities
Pricing will start at $2,279 USD for the ‘fast’ model and $2,479 USD for a ‘fastest’ model. It looks as though you can pre-order your ModBook from Other World Computing here.
With MacWorld upon us, I’m sure Axiotron is simply trying to hit the market before Apple releases their tablet computer. This raises the question: Does Axiotron know that Apple is going to be launching a tablet at MacWorld? Certainly food for thought.
I’d wait till MacWorld hits us before considering picking one of these bad boys up… Plus I’d wait to read some reviews as well. With tablets like the ModBook due to hit the market in the year to come, it will be only a matter of time before Apple releases their own version. What do you think?

From all reports I’ve read, yes.
Over the last few days I’ve spent some time scouring and reading all I can on the so-called tablet, or ‘iTablet’ computer that Apple is supposed to have in the works. All accounts bring to light that the iTablet will be a reality, and that it might be shipping as early as January 2008.
In fact, our friends at PhoneDifferent received a tip from an employee at Asus (the company that builds most of Apple’s laptops). The tip confirmed that production of the iTablet is well underway. The tipster revealed the new computer could be ready for the Mac World Expo ‘08 which starts January 15th, 2008.
I still haven’t decided if this is something I would personally be interested in or not. I’ve tried out and used tablet PC’s before, and they didn’t do anything for me. If the OS does indeed function like the iPhone (and why wouldn’t it?) I could see the iTablet being very useful. With keys and controls that change depending on the application, and the touch-screen controls (finger flicking, pinching, etc.), this one might be worth a look.
It’s still to early to say though. I’ll keep an eye on this as news comes in. One thing is for sure though, Apple won’t release a tablet computer unless it is unlike anything else out on the market today. They won’t want to be ‘another tablet’ I can guarantee that.
