25 Years of Apple Mice

Here at Mactropolis, we don’t normally cover stories like this, but I think this is worthy of a post.

It really is amazing to see how far the mouse has come since Apple introduced in alongside the original Macintosh in 1984.

I think these photos are pretty representative of the entire computer industry. Think about it, mice were once an experimental computer accessory, and they looked the part. Nowadays, they are streamlined, operate smoothly, and are an indispensable part of our day-to-day computing. Apple should be congratulated for this, because if it were up to Microsoft, we’d still be using the command line(yes, I’m being hyperbolic). Also, I’m glad the trackball died out (albeit a slow death). Can I get an amen?

Of course, Apple again revolutionized the way we deal with our computers when they brought multi-touch to the masses with the launch of the iPhone in January 2007. Now just about every cutting edge phone released has some sort of multi-touch-esque features.

I also suspect Apple will change things up again when/if they introduce the mythical “iSlate” tablet thingy. And who knows, this “Magic Slate” input device thing may blow our minds if/when it’s introduced.

One thing is for sure though. Apple (and Google) will be the defining tech company in the decade to come.

From all of us at Mactropolis, have a Happy New Year.

Say Goodbye to your Productivity

Say goodbye to your productivity; some developers have just released a menu bar notification app for Facebook. What does this mean? Now you can find out all of that meaningless banter that is FB just by clicking  in your menu bar.

So what’s good about it? Well, checking Notifications is a breeze. Just by clicking you can see all your FB notifications updated in real-time. Another thing this app does really well is satisfy your need to update and be updated. Clicking , and then clicking ‘Update Status’ brings up a nice-looking HUD where you can update, well, whatever’s on your mind.

But is isn’t all Status Updates and Notifications. This app lacks in the way it allows you access and distirbute your FB information. Once you open it and decide you want to use one of the app’s other features, like composing a new message or checking your profile, it opens a web browser and you have to log into FB. Like really, doesnt that defeat the whole need for a menubar app?

I dunno. You decide if this works for you. To get this Mac-only app, click here.

Music Video Made with 21 MacBooks

Here is a music video made by “THIS IS A SHAKEDOWN!”. All of the band members are Mac users and fans of the platform.

THIS IS A SHAKEDOWN!:

At first glance of Circles, one might notice that the band is surrounded by the glow of laptops. The video was recorded via Apple Mac Books Photo Booth – the same program most users utilize to dilapidate their face for their MySpace page. This has created a whole new kind of artistic expression, courtesy of THIS IS A SHAKEDOWN!

Filmed at Ante Up Audio in Cleveland, it took 21 borrowed Mac Books to create this masterpiece, which was directed and edited by Bryan Porter of Enigma Digital Media. The result is nothing short of stunning. However, due to the intense strobe effects, this video would unlikely be played on television (it comes with a warning for those with epilepsy or vertigo).

This goes to show, when you combine great tools with great talent, magic happens.

You can check out THIS IS A SHAKEDOWN!’s other works on their Myspace page here.

Steve Wozniak Has Awesome Business Cards

The geek legend and Apple co-founder was so impressed with the Holograms app for the iPhone, he gave them his business card. This isn’t your daddy’s business card.

The Card itself is made of etched metal with painted lettering. I would hate to know how much those things cost. Also, I bet he can’t carry too many of those things with him at a time, simply because they are so thick and heavy. In return for the card the developer took a picture of Woz and his wife, and turned it into a hologram.

If this developer got the Woz’s blessing, then it will be a success in the App Store.

Do you have any unique business card stories? Leave a comment!

Hardware Store Tricks Apple Into Paying for Half of its Billboard

In a curious story from Macenstein, it seems the Canadian hardware chain Rona has used Apple’s already in place “nano-chromatic” billboards to complete there own billboards. The picture below should explain the situation.

The “nano-chromatic” billboards feature all of the iPod nano’s in color order dripping color. Rona went in and placed there banner below the ad that features paint buckets collecting the dripping colors. Rona’s ad is informing others that they not only sell paint, but recycle it too. Very clever.

Burning Question: Can You Swallow the iPod Shuffle?

I know that’s a burning question that has been eating away at you, right? Can the new iPod Shuffle be swallowed? (sound the sarcasm alarm) The folks over at Gizmodo enlisted the services of Coney Island Circus sword-swallower Heather Holiday, and the rest is history. No further comment from me needed here… you can check out the video below.

Steve Wozniak to Star in ‘Footloose’ Remake

Apparently there’s a remake of the movie ‘Footloose’ in the works. High School Musical star Zac Effron decided to give the film a big ol snub, but thankfully the one and only WOZ has stepped in. Check out the video above. Ahhhh Kimmel. Hilarious.

Thanks Chuck!

iCount… Is That It? Or is it iCun… Oh my.

Yeah that’s right, seems as though the iCount app managed to make its way into the app store with an icon that was somewhat… um… Freudian? Drop the ‘O’ out of the logo and what do you get? Yeah, don’t say it… I just wanted to point it out. Thankfully Apple has made the developer change the graphic, so all is well and good in iCount-land again. I’m sure this was just an honest mistake.

To see the new iCount icon you can check it out in the App Store.

Thanks Toby!
