Chronic-les, the iPhone app for legalization

So what do you think of when you think of iPhone apps? Games? Crazy Calculators? Fart Machines? Other useless apps? Well how about an application that can potentially help legalize Marijuana?

Chronic-les is a newly released iPhone/iPod Touch app that is attempting to campaign the legalizaition of Marijuana for personal use in a whole new way. With legalization of marijuana being a major topic of today, it didn’t take long for someone to create an iPhone app to help the cause.

Chronic-les has three major components to it.

  • Find out where the nearest NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) chapters are located.
  • Instantly know the current Marijuana laws wherever you are.
  • Send a pre-drafted email directly to President Obama to protest the prohibition of marijuana.

A slew of features for $0.99. Chronic-les mission statement is “to utilize advances in technology to advocate the legalization of marijuana for personal use.” If you are interested in the legalization of Marijuana, you should try out this app from the iTunes store.

Microsoft Says To Hold Off On Buying An iPhone

Zune HD

Zune HD

Micrsoft’s official Office 2010 twitter account told some followers today to hold off on buying an iPhone or Pre next month. That could only mean that they are going to announce something pretty big as far as a phone/multimedia device. Could it be the Zune HD that everyone has been speaking of? If it is going to live up to an iPhone or Palm Pre it obviously is going to have to be a phone also. June is going to be a huge month with WWDC, Palm Pre release, E3 Gaming expo, and now this big Microsoft announcement. The Zune HD has been rumored to be capable to play original Xbox games. Will this Microsoft “super handheld” be capable of defeating the iPhone? It probably has the same chance as the Blackberry Storm had.

I’m actually pretty excited because I now have no idea what could happen in the next month. Anything is really possible as far as Apple, Microsoft, and Palm go. I can’t wait for June! Here is a screencap from Microsoft’s Office 2010 Twitter account. Click to view their page.

iPod Shuffle Only Costs $22 To Make

Guts of a 3G iPod Shuffle

iSuppli is reporting that the 3rd gen iPod Shuffle only costs a measly $21.77 to make. Apple is making such a huge profit on these little things. It is only a matter of time before the Chinese manufactures create a cheap clone to the shuffle.

Here’s a break-down of the parts:

  • Processor – $5.98
  • Storage unit – $6
  • Lithium Ion Battery – $1.20
  • This leaves only about $9 for the case and screen

“That’s about 28% of the device’s retail price. The smaller the component cost as a percentage of price, the higher the potential profit. This suggests the per-unit profit margin on the shuffle is higher than on other iPod models. The component cost for the first iPod touch released in 2007, for instance, amounted to about $147, or about 49% of its $299 retail price. The component cost of the third-generation iPod nano, also released in 2007, amounted to about 40% of its retail price”

Apple Admits To The White MacBook Cracking Issue

Cracking along a white MacBook

If you own an older white MacBook you may have noticed some hairline cracks on the bottom case. These cracks are known to form around the front, under the palmrests and trackpad, around the I/O ports, near back rear corners, and around the rear vents.

Good news came out of Apple admitting to these cracks…they will fix them even if you are out of warranty. It is now stated that these cases may crack under normal use. Apple’s old policy would not cover the bottom casing in a repair. If your old white MacBook has some cracking issues you are allowed to take it in to a store and have them fit it, in or out of warranty. They will diagnose that it is not directly your fault and is just caused by normal wear.

I’m glad Apple made the decision to switch over to a unibody aluminum laptop so we wont have to see these issues anymore. I bet they will be pushing their new line of MacBooks when you take your old one in for cracking repairs.

U2 leaves Apple for Blackberry

U2's special edition iPod

We all know how strict Apple is with the design of their products. Remember when Apple released a special “U2 edition iPod Video”? Well, you will never see one again because U2 has left Apple for Research In Motion’s Blackberries. This came about when U2 approached Apple to design some new products for them. Apple rejected U2, leading the band to switch to RIM (Research In Motion). RIM would allow U2 to have more of a direct say in the final outcome of the product.

“[RIM] is going to give us what Apple wouldn’t — access to their labs and their people so we can do something really spectacular,” Bono said.

Nothing has been announced yet as far as new Blackberry models go. Apple had created the special edition U2 iPods from 2004 to 2006. RIM is not known for allowing others to create a specific design for their products, but re more willing than Apple. I would keep an eye out on RIM to create more products that are competing for the top spot in the smartphone industry.

Next iPhone to Have FM Transmission Capabilities

According to a  future specs sheet shown by Gizmodo, the next generation iPhone will have a built in FM trasmitter and reciever.

” “The BCM4329 includes both FM transmit and receive capabilities. FM transmit enables consumers to stream music directly from a personal media players (PMPs) or mobile phone to car stereos or home theater systems without having to purchase special adapters or use bulky cables. FM receive is already a popular feature that enables consumers to obtain real-time traffic information as well as listen to music, news and sports broadcasts on their mobile phones.” ”

This would be pretty cool for those popular AT&T moments where service is never to be found, you could still have some sort of contact with the world.

Apple Proposes iPhone That Calls Security When Stolen

Apple’s iPhone security-related patent filings described a new piece of software that would notify a security agent in the event of the handset being lost or stolen. This process would then lead to a police officer being dispatched to the current location via GPS coordinates of the phone.

The phone would be placed into “prevention” mode when it detects a force that exceeds a predetermined threshold. When in prevention mode, the phone would send out a secutiry transmission which security personel would receive. The security entity would then either dispatch an officer or call the devices owner.

This whole thing sounds kinda funny. It will most likely be a feature that will cost extra. The security feature doesn’t seem to be well thought at all. Who is to say that everytime a phone is stolen it is going to withstand a certain threshold? There is such a thing as a sneaky theif who might slide your phone into their pocket. This just seems like a good feature for someone who has very important top secret information on their phone.
