Macheist 3 Applications Announced

It’s here!  If you are like me you have been figuring out these hard puzzles on MacHeist.com trying to win yourself free software for two months.  Well now your labor has payed off!  But wait, for all of the readers that don’t know what MacHeist is I will explain.  MacHeist is a site that features little ‘missions’ that are puzzles you have to figure out to receive free software.  Each mission involves finding different things and decoding weird messages that can be very frustrating.  For every mision there are prizes for finishing the puzzles, and each mission provides one to three programs for free.  Well the third installation of MacHeist is finally finished and the famed MacHeist Bundle has been released for purchase.  This bundle lets registered users buy $558 worth of applications for $39.  Yes you heard right, all those apps for such a cheap price.   Plus if you have completed every mission you should have $8 worth of bundle discounts towards your purchase.  The bundle features apps like Phone View which allows you to plug in your iPhone or iPod Touch and view the files, notes, SMS messages, music and more all from your desktop.  If you buy now you get eight core applications and one bonus application if you are one of the first 25,000 buyers.  As the total money raised goes up more applications become available with a final application total of 12, 13 if you buy early.

MacHeist donates 25% of every purchase to charity and you get to choose which one your money goes toward, or your can choose to have it split between all the charities.  I know it’s a lot to take in, but you should definitely take advantage of this offer as soon as possible.

New iPhone and Netbook on the Way?

We hear them all the time, rumors of Apple’s new netbook or the new touchscreen tablet or even a new iPhone.  This time is just like the others, only there is more information present.  SmartHouse is an Australian blog about products for the home.  They have released a rumor they claim to be true about a partnership of Apple with LG for an OLED display.  They report that a source they spoke to as told them there will be a netbook released by Apple and that there is already a prototype in the open.  They are telling us that LG reported a 25% increase in OLED R&D and that they are going to invest three billion dollar into the project.  The site claims that Apple has already put up $500 million for new display technologies.  Last month blogs across the blogosphere reported that Apple was ordering new touchscreens with a surface that repels finger prints and oils.  SmartHouse is also saying that Apple is trying to get a thin OLED for use in a future version of the Apple TV.  Personally I think this is a bit far-fetched to hear all this news at once.  Do you really think that Apple would let this kind of information leak?  Do you honestly think they would release all these products?  I’m hopeful that they are getting new iPhones and iPod Touches, and begging for a netbook, but the Apple TV thing is taking it too far.  The rumors will fly around, but we will never know until the Keynote presentation.  Let us know what you think of these rumors in the comment section.

iTunes 8.1 Features: iTunes DJ

With the release of iTunes 8.1 came the release of the new iTunes DJ feature.  Those that have the latest update to the Remote application put out by Apple will be able to use this new feature.  Here’s how it works.  You’re having a killer party and everyone there has an iPhone or iPod Touch and the Remote application and they connect to your library.  Well they can access all your songs and go to the iTunes DJ playlist and request the next song to be played.  The settings allow you to change the amount of songs displayed coming up and already played.  It also lets you add a welcome message to those browsing your personal library for songs to add.  Now if you are feeling weary about someone browsing through your library then you can add a password so random people can’t add songs to the playlist.  Another great feature lets you enable voting for the songs, the more votes the higher it moves up on the list.  I have given it a try and absolutely love it.  It seems like it will be a sweet addition to a party.  But the one thing I wouldn’t like is all the people at my party sitting around on their iPhones and iPods and not having a good time.  Make sure you get the Remote application from the App Store and then download the new iTunes!

Update: iPhone Prototype Pulled from eBay

Well it looks like the overlords at Apple have laid down the law. I was hoping on sharing a video of the iPhone prototype in action but it looks like it has been pulled from YouTube. You thought that was it?  Well now the listing has been pulled from eBay. From under our noses the listing was ripped, most likely by those at Cupertino. So are they afraid of what this leak will bring to competitors? I can understand, but after the progress they have made so far I wouldn’t expect them to act this way. Let us know what you think in the forums!

Early iPhone Prototype Found on eBay, Not Recession-Proof.

The big story on the wires this week, on eBay there sits an auction for an early prototype of the iPhone. The neat thing is that it runs on the prototype OS. eBay has been known for it’s weird auctions and fake sells, but this one seems legit.

The seller has two of the prototypes, one with a matte screen in working condition and one with a glass screen that doesn’t work. Both of the phones have no etching to indicate what they are or how much space they have, which should bump up the value quite a bit. There seems to be many problems using the phones since only one works and it doesn’t even work fully. The working phone can call and receive calls like any other phone, but it cannot send text messages, only receive.

The auction is currently at $2000 for both phones and two soft cases with 52 bids. So if you don’t even know what a recession is and have enough money to own a nice piece of history, then get your butt over to the listing and bid away, you only have one day and twelve hours until the end of the bidding race.

iWork ‘09 Hands On

Okay, so I went ahead and got iWork ‘09 and can’t wait to share the features with you.  Just like the older versions when you open the program you are presented with the themes available for creating your document.  There are tons more themes available for this round of software and they look great.  Now this wasn’t the most exciting of announcements made this keynote, but it’s the only one that is readily available.  One of the great new features of Pages is full-screen mode.  If you are getting distracted by iChat windows or updating your Facebook every minute then all you do is hit the full-screen button and then the document is viewed to the fullest and black bars surround the uncovered areas.

Keynote features some amazing new slides for transitions that give your presentation that pop.  Also Apple released the Keynote Remote for the iPhone/iPod Touch.  This allows you to switch slides and in vertical mode it displays the current slide and any notes you have, but in horizontal mode it shows the current and the next slide and to switch the slides is in the flick of your finger.  I personally have never used Numbers, not even in the ‘08 edition, so I can’t really tell you whats new about that.

The most exciting feature is the announcement of the iWork website, iWork.com, for use with the iWork suite.  If you have ever used Google Docs, then this is somewhat similar. The site holds your documents in a cloud for you to send to other contributors.  When they get the e-mail and open the online document they can view it just like if they were using Pages, Keynote, or Numbers.  If they want to make changes they simply click the download button and they can download the file as a Keynote, PDF, or Powerpoint document.  This is great for businesses and for getting someone to proof-read your documents.  Now I have tried it and you get 1GB of storage for the Beta, but Phil noted that when out of Beta it will cost money.

I think that wraps up the new iWork features, I say give it a try and take advantage of the 30-day trial.  Now I’m just sitting back waiting for iLife ‘09 to come out!

Macworld ‘09 – iLife ‘09 – iMovie

Ok the craziness continues.  I am not a huge user of iMovie so most of this doesn’t interest me.  The new program features precision editing, advanced drag and drop, animated travel maps, and image stabilization.  With the new iMovie you can grab audio from another clip then add it to a different clip easily.  You can view your projects in a thumbnail view as opposed to the iPhoto ‘08.  Image stabilization is said to be really nice but slow to correct, but worth every penny.  You can now add effects to your videos and also add slow motion to any clip.  There are updated themes and many more great new features!  Thanks again to Gizmodo for the photos and liveblog, check them out at live.gizmodo.com

Macworld ‘09 – iLife ‘09 – iPhoto

Today is the famed last keynote from Apple at Macworld and I am following the liveblogs like crazy!  The first announcement from Phil is iLife ‘09.  This new suite of apps is a big improvement on the already spectacular applications that come pre-installed on any new Apple computer.  The first main new development is iPhoto, where the new methods of organization are faces and places.  Faces will determine the faces in your library and let you see other pictures with the same face.  Places uses geo-tagging to find the direct points of where a photo was taken.  Don’t have geo-tagging? Well all you have to do is edit the event and put the location that the photos were taken.  Places also uses Google Maps, so you can view the maps just as you were on the website.  You can also look at specific places and see all of the photos taken there.  The new iPhoto also adds new slide show themes and integration with iTunes so that you can put the slide shows on your iPhone or iPod Touch, cool isn’t it!  Another great feature coming to iPhoto ‘09 is the ability to add maps to the new Books.  When creating a book you can put a map on any page.  The greatest feature to me, Flickr and Facebook support added into the software, if you upload to Facebook and someone tags the photos, then the info is synced back to your iPhoto and that face is added to your database.  Assuming that Apple will hold true to its past this should be available for purchase today in stores and online.  Stay tuned for more info coming up!  And thanks to Gizmodo for the liveblog and pictures, we have no one in the conference.

New iMac and Mac Mini’s to use NVIDIA

The new Macbooks and Macbook Pros are shipping with the new NVIDIA chipset and further evidence suggests that the NVIDIA may be working its way into the new rumored Mac Mini and iMacs.  Apple Insider reported a find in a forum where a user dug into some files and found some evidence that the chips may be used and that new computers are on the way.  The different characters are the following ‘Macmini3,1′ and ‘iMac9,1′ and they would suggest that there be a new computer coming.  Currently the Mini and iMac code reads ‘Macmini2,1′ and ‘iMac8,1.’  They also found that the chipset is listed as ‘CFG_MCP79′ which are the same as the current line of uni-body Macbooks.

Now we have heard rumors of a new launch of a Mac Mini from the Mayor himself.  Maybe we will be seeing Minis and iMacs that are made from a single block of Aluminum and including the same updates as the uni-body laptops.  We can only hope for the future, but personally I don’t think that the announcement will be as good with Jobs not giving the keynote at Macworld.

Physical Keyboard Hack for the iPhone

A hard version of the connection to the keyboard

A hard version of the connection to the keyboard

Do you hate the touchscreen keyboard and want to type in landscape directly in the Mail app? Well now you can! Some developers have found a way to connect a small keyboard to your iPhone.  They created the connection cable and figured a way to allow for it in the jailbroken firmware.  So if you shoot out 1000 emails in a day and you need to do one more but that touchscreen has given you raw fingers, try this out.  This could open up many possibilities for other and bigger keyboards to be used to type some emails.  You do have to have a jailbroken iPod Touch/iPhone and you need the small keyboard and connector. I think this would be cool, but I do love my touchscreen keyboard adn couldn’t give that up.
