Apple Patents 3D Projection Technology

Read this over at MacNN this morning… and thought it was worthy of noting here. Seems as though Apple has patented a simulated 3D projection technology. The patent was originally submitted way back in September of 2006.

The patent details a screen with an ‘angularly-responsive’ reflective surface that works together with a projector and secondary device… The device? Something called a ‘3D imager’. I’d like to know more about this device although the details I’ve been able to find so far are vague at best. The 3D images is used to gauge the position of observers relative to the screen. Depending on the observers’ position, the imager would react and make changes to the image, ensuring full 3D effect.

In a nutshell this system simply fools the brain to ‘mimic a hologram’ says the patent. No cool blue/red glasses are needed (bummer? :)) You should also be able to move around the room without losing clarity or effectiveness of the picture. Sounds pretty cool.

I predict Apple to release the most expensive projector ever made in the next few years. Can I get a seconder?
