iPhone Receives Regulatory Approval from China

Engadget is reporting that the an China-specific iPhone model (model number A1324) has finally recieved a five-year approval from China’s State Radio Regulatory Commission. This approval came all the way back from May 7th, but has just recently been posted on the commission’s website.

Also, a set of three images were originally leaked by a Chinese news site earlier in the day, but have since been pulled. No worries PC World has you covered:

The pictures were posted on Chinese portal Sina.com.cn on Friday morning and showed an iPhone with simplified Chinese characters in its display and inscribed on the back of the handset. Simplified characters are used in mainland China and Singapore, but Singaporean iPhones don’t have Chinese inscription on the case. (Hong Kong and Taiwan use more complex traditional characters)

MacRumors has now posted the pulled images. They show the device running on the China Unicom network, along with simplified Chinese text on the back. Rumors of a nearly complete Apple-Unicom deal have been surfacing as of late. We’ll have to wait and see.

iPhone 3.0.1

Apple released the 3.0.1 update for all iPhone generations today. This update should take care of the security issues surrounding the iPhone’s apparent SMS vulnerability.

Tablet Rumours…again.

The Interent is abuzz with rumours of an Apple Tablet. Every RSS feed, blog, and online rumour-mill seems to be pointing to sometime between September and December as the aproximate date that Apple will release this elusive product; just in time to capture the end-of-the-year shopping season.

But these rumour-mills are getting thicker as more reliable sources step forward to announce their knowledge of an Apple Tablet-like product. Today, the mostly-reliable Financial Times printed an article that apparantley confirms the release of an oversized iPod touch for sometime in September. This timing works really well with speculation of a Fall release of a Tablet product.

The Financial Times article claims that this “new touch-sensitive device Apple is working on will have a screen that may be up to 10 inches diagonally.” It also sizes up Apple by saying that “Apple is gambling that it can succeed where everyone else has flopped, including Microsoft, which tirelessly pushed a tablet-ready version of its Windows operating system as a personal favourite of founder Bill Gates.”

Could this be the Tablet-like device that rumours claim will be released sometime this Fall, or is it just that, another rumour that fails to stand up.

Apple Not Attending CES 2010

What a ride. The Wall Street Journal has since issued a “Clarification” on their previous report that Apple is planning on attending CES 2010.

WSJ:

Clarification: Apple has not made any plans to attend CES 2010.

Correction: It is not clear whether Apple will attend the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show. This post previously stated that Apple would attend.”

Back on earth this mean that Apple probably isn’t going to show up at CES 2010. Engadget goes the extra mile:

Unfortunately, it’s also specious and flatly wrong. I was seated directly across from Gary, and present for the entire conversation, wherein a dozen or so other journos chatted with him and one another. […] At no point did Gary even remotely imply that Apple would be present at a future CES — let alone state flatly that Apple “will be there” in 2010. In fact, at one point, someone asked if, hypothetically, Apple did want to attend CES, whether the CEA could accommodate them. Gary said flatly that if pressed, they might be able to come up with a small 2,000 square foot booth, but they couldn’t do anything, say, Microsoft-sized on such short notice.

The Gary mentioned in the above quote is Gary Shapiro, the CEO of the CEA, the trade group that puts on CES.

With all of this said and done, the only nugget of truth in this whole story is that Steve Jobs was asked to speak at CES, but has yet to respond.

So someone jumped the gun at The Wall Street Journal and got everyone all excited. Did no one learn from the last time?

Apple Discontinues Shake

Alongside today’s release of Time Capsule upgrades, Apple has also very quietly pulled Shake from the store.

Shake was a $499 digital effects and compositing suite that saw it’s last major update (4.1) way back in 2006. There was also a minor update (4.1.1) in 2008.

After the last update Apple informed customers that they did not plan on any more updates, and so the suite sat dormant until it was pulled this morning.

Going to Shake’s former webpage now redirects to the Final Cut Studio page.

Steve Jobs Photographed Leaving Apple Campus

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen the one-and-only Steve Jobs in public… But thanks to the crazies (and I use that term politely) over at TMZ, a new images of Steve-O in public has emerged. The image was snapped as he was leaving the Apple campus. It’s good to see the black shirt and blue jeans again.

I’m not one to gossip or gawk, and honestly I can’t stand the paparazzi… But I wanted to share this with you all to spread the good word that Steve is doing just fine.

As always, everyone here at Mactropolis wishes Steve all the best, and we can’t wait to catch him in action again as soon as possible…. Perhaps at CES 2010?

Apple to Attend CES 2010, Steve Jobs to Keynote?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple is planning to attend CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in 2010. This will be Apple’s first time attending the show. Apple had been rumored to be exhibiting at the 2010 CES shortly after they withdrew from the annual Macworld expo.

This report also mentions that Steve Jobs was formally invited to keynote the show, and hasn’t responded yet:

At a dinner with journalists this week in San Francisco, CEA?s Shapiro was asked whether he?s invited Jobs, who recently returned from medical leave, to keynote the show. Yes, Jobs has been asked, but nobody from Apple has gotten back to him, Shapiro said.

This is an interesting development. Also note, The Wall Street Journal states this as fact, not as speculation.

Developers Can Now Submit Keywords to Facilitate App Store Search

MacRumors is reporting that Apple is requesting developers to include keywords in their app submissions. This is an attempt to improve search results for applications. Developers are reportedly allowed 255 characters for their keywords, in actuality its 100 characters.

AppleInsider:

“It is important to enter keywords for all applications as soon as possible so your application can continue to be successfully located on the App Store,” the update from Apple reads. “Keywords can be updated with the submission of a new binary.”

This all follows announcements from last week’s conference call in where Apple officials stated that they were working on better categorization for Apps in the store.

Apple Releases iDisk iPhone Application

Apple has finally released it’s long-mentioned MobileMe iDisk App [iTunes Link]. Since WWDC this past June, users have been patiently waiting for the release of this app, which allows users with a MobileMe account to access their iDisk data on their iPhone or iPod Touch.

Features:

- View files on your iDisk
- Access Public folders
- Easily share files from your iPhone
- Quickly access recently viewed files
- View iPhone-supported file types-including iWork, Office, PDF, QuickTime and more. (Files larger than 20MB may not be viewable.)

This app requires a MobileMe subscription to function, and an iPhone or iPod touch with the iPhone 3.0 software installed. Apple has even released a video overview of the app.
