Xserve Refresh Soon?

New Xserves are expected for release anytime now, according to this report by AppleInsider.

The tip off came when one of their readers noticed in a pre-release build of Mac OS X 10.5.7, listings of a Xserve 3,1 in the AppleTyMCEDriver extension file. The current Xserve model is listed as Xserve 2,1.

Based on this information, Mac OS X 10.5.7 may ship with the new Xserves, or visa versa within the next two weeks or so.

Second beta of iPhone 3.0 Software Released to Developers

Apple released to developers today, a second version of the iPhone SDK and OS, along with a statement promising the gradual opening of it’s live push notifications system, and in-app purchasing to developers.

This second version comes only two weeks after the first vrsion of the 3.0 software was announced. This build (7A259) has knocked out bugs reported by developers while increasing the speed of the software.

Apple has stated MMS and tethering are supported in beta 2, but have asked developers not to use them. Which makes no sense.

If you’re a developer you can get the new beta here.

UPDATE: MacRumors is reporting users can now have 11 pages of apps on there iPhone or iPod touch instead of the current 9 pages. That brings the total up to 180 applications from the current 148 limit.

Skype For iPhone Is Here!

Time to save money!

Time to save money!

Yes!, and big changes are coming now to the iPhone world:

-Free App
-Free Skype-to-Skype video and voice calls
-Free Chat
-Cheap VoIP, SMS, etc. (Skype to regular phones)

All this can be done over Wi-Fi and 3G network (firmware 2.2.1 seems to be having problems with 3G, but that shouldn’t be a problem since everyone is going to be using firmware 3.0 as soon as it comes out…) and on both iPhone and iPod Touch.

A personal prediction of mine is that slowly we’ll see that people will start wanting only data plans (3G network), since VoIP is just $5.95 a month for unlimited country calls, and $12.95 a month for unlimited calls worldwide, the rest of the stuff you pay for is cheap enough, and let’s not forget that if your friends also have Skype, you can call them (both voice and video) for free! So let’s hope capitalism doesn’t get in the way and have the phone carriers to make you sign phone plans (*cough*AT&T*cough*).

And here are some links so that you can know more about all of this more in-depth:

-Skype’s prices.
-Skype for the iPhone.

The app is now available at the App Store for Free.

Self Control App Helps You Concentrate

Have you even been so distracted by your email, blogs, and YouTube videos that you get absolutely no work done at all? Maybe you should give this free application for Mac OSX a shot to see if it helps you concentrate on getting the important stuff done on time.

Self Control is an app by Steve Lambert that allows you to block access to websites and email servers. This allows you to still utilize the internet, but blocks you favorite time consuming websites. This app sounds like a great idea and I cant wait to give it a shot next time I have something important to do. You can download Self Control for yourself from Steve’s site.

Next-Gen iPhone Concept

Gizmodo is showing an image of how the next-gen iPhone a.k.a iPhone 4G may look, it is a flatter and thinner design showing the white and the black version of the iPhone.

Althought this is just a concept, it’s good to think it will feature a front camera for video conferences and a bigger sensor in the normal camera, this is a must have if Apple wants to keep it’s position in the smartphone market, other phones are using 8 Megapixels sensors while the iPhone uses just a 2 MP, also, it wouldn’t hurt adding a flash for those night pictures.

What do you think about the concept? How will you improve the iPhone design? Let us know in the comments.

Macworld Moves Dates in 2010

Macworld Expo will move to February in 2010. The start date is Tuesday February 9th and will run through to Saturday February 13th.

Supposedly the reason for moving the date is exhibitor complaints on timing. Exhibitor’s were stressed to make the January showings due to the busy holiday selling season, and had to decide whether to postpone product announcements until Macworld, or announce them for potentially lucrative pre-holiday sales. If they did decide to exhibit at the show the developers would have to rush to complete code, ship products to San Francisco, and travel for the trade show.  Not a good situation, for an indipendent developer trying to make a living.

Another reason  for the date change is Macworld would often times overlap, or come ridiculously close to being held at the same time as the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that is held in January in Las Vegas. So if you were, say, a journalist you had to decide which one to cover or split your time between the two. Again, not a good situation.

We had all been wondering if Macworld would make it after this year, since Apple announced it would no longer be participating in the show. This is a resounding yes, at least one more year.

I suspect if 2010’s show does decently, Macworld Expo might survive, or even continue to thrive in future years. If not then next year’s Macworld may very well be the last.

New build of Mac OS X 10.5.7 Seeded

World of Apple is reporting Apple has released yet another seed of Mac OS X 10.5.7 to developers. This build (9J39), like the last few, has few know issues and the only know problem is the Safari 4 beta won’t install.

Apple  has released several updates at almost a weekly biases. Increased seed speeds and few know issues indicates an imminent release.

If I keep saying it I’ll be right sooner or later.

Learn how to use your Mac at Best Buy

I have known for some time that if you are lucky enough to live close to an Apple retail store that you can go there and get lessons on how to use Apple products. I always thought that was a great thing if you happened to live near one. I do not.

This weekend I was shopping for some new electronics and stopped in at best buy. As i was browsing through the store I saw a large Apple display. I made the assumption it was a product promotion or something and kept shopping.

Well as I got closer to the display I realized there where several people gathered around and there was almost every Apple hardware product represented. I inquired a bit further and found that Best Buy was actually holding Apple training sessions for Mac users. They had a schedule of topics so you can plan to attend a subject of interest to you.

This day they where doing a fairly in depth training on how to use Garage Band.

I do not know if this is occurring at all best buy stores but if you live in an area where an Apple store is not close by then give Best Buy a try and you may be able to pick up some free training.

Skype for iPhone Coming Next Week?

Some time ago Skype CEO Josh Silverman was asked about Skype for the iPhone. Without giving away the goat (I’m not sure what that means) all he could say was ’stay tuned’. With that in mind, I know we all realised it was only a matter of time before Skype hit the iPhone.

Now, new word is coming out via a ‘reliable’ tipster over at Gigaom. The word is that Skype is almost ready to launch on the iPhone… Perhaps as early as next week. This would make sense, seeing at CTIA kicks off next week. CTIA is a great platform to launch products, services, apps and everything else techno-geeky-ish.

Stay tuned for more on this one, but there’s no doubt Skype has to get movin’ on the whole mobile thing in order to continue growth and success. While they do have a Windows Mobile client, I know iPhone, BlackBerry and all other types of smartphone devices are pining for Skype. Enough of these other 3rd party apps that make use of Skype. It’s time for Skype to release their own version of Skype Mobile on all major platforms… to real in the Skype die-hards.
