Cameron Diaz is a Mac Chick

On February 28, 2009, in iPhone Sightings, by Mr. Mayor

Haven’t done one of these in awhile. Apparently Cameron Diaz has a MacBook Air. Whod-a-thunk it. I’m going to file this one under ‘iPhone Sightings’ only because I assume she has an iPhone hangin’ around somewhere too :P More images are available over at Splash News.

Happy Saturday everyone!

In a move sure to please most developers, Apple has gone ahead and removed older App Store reviews from users that hadn’t even purchased the apps they were reviewing. About time I’d say! I know from personal account from a few developer friends of mine, that these initial reviews could be absolutely killer, tarnishing the reputation and sales of an app… when the review is for all intents and purposes unfounded.

Before September of last year, all apps in the App Store were reviewable by anyone… and you didn’t even need to purchase the app to enter the review. Garbage! The new policies set in place in September required that the app be purchased and installed before a review could be submitted. Thankfully like I mentioned above, Apple has now gone back and removed all of the previous, somewhat ‘bogus’ reviews from the store.

Bottom line here is this was a move that needed to be made. I know there are a lot of developers out there with a smile on their face now. If you want to leave a bad review, that’s still all good… But at least you have to buy, install, and TRY out the darn thing first! That’s the way it should be.

So what’s the latest on Apple CEO Steven P. Jobs? Well, the other day was his birthday (Happy 54th again, Steve), and now word is coming out that he still intends on returning to the company from his medical leave by the end of June. This news came at the end of the annual shareholder meeting yesterday.

Jobs did not attend the meeting, however at one point in the proceedings investors stood up and sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to him. Isn’t that nice? Awwwwww.

In early January Jobs told the world that he had a treatable hormone imbalance and would continue to run the ship. However the very next week he decided to go on medical leave to focus on his health, as he should.

Apple director Arthur Levinson responded to inquiries about Jobs’ return, noting that ‘nothing has changed’… In other words, Steve is still due back at the end of June.

Back in the day, Apple created the concept video above to inspire and pump-up staff. Check it out, it’s quite interesting. It features the ‘Apple Knowledge Navigator’ and plays out an ‘ideal fantasy design’ as according to Apple at the time.

Concept videos were (and are) often used for these reasons. Shoot for the moon, and then pull back a bit and develop something for real world use. Any way you slice it, the video above was pretty darn good for 1987.

Apple Launches Safari 4 Beta

On February 24, 2009, in Software, by Mr. Mayor

Apple has gone ahead and launched the latest version of Safari… Safari 4 Beta. There’s a whole whack-load of changes and updates to cover, so I encourage you to install the update or read more about it on Apple. The update will not come via Software Update, so you’ll need to download the old fashioned way, sorry :)

Some new key features:

Top Sites
Check out your favorite sites at a glance and open with one click.

Cover Flow
Cover Flow arrives in Safari form. Flip through your history or bookmarks just like you would album artwork in iTunes, or files in the Finder.

Tabs on Top
Manage tabs or open them in a wide window for exploring the web.

Windows Native Look and Feel
Windows XP and Vista users will be pleased to know that this version will fit right in on their OS.

Nitro Engine
This version of Safari promises to be the fastest browser out there… Period.

Want to read more about these and other new key features? Check it out on Apple right here.

I just downloaded it myself and will be giving it a spin shortly. Happy Safari 4 Beta surfing and testing to all!

Tuesday Morning Funnies: Yes it Can!

A little humor for you this morning. My iPhone can do everything!

Apple has gone ahead and launched a new web ad which focuses on the ‘World’s Greenest Family of Notebooks’ theme. The unibody 17″ MacBookPro is the star of the ad, which can be found running on NYTimes.com and other major websites right now.

Wish I could shell out the cashola for the 17″… She looks sweet. However, my trusty 15″ MBP is still doing me just fine, thank you.

In the upcoming season of ‘Dancing with the Stars’, due to commence March 9th on ABC, Steve Wozniak is busy pumping up Apple fans to get their vote. In a recent interview he urged all Apple fans to get out and vote for him. While he realizes he will never be the lightest or best dancer out there on the floor, he’s sure he can garner enough votes to make it pretty deep into the competition. The Woz noted:

‘If enough hackers care for me … maybe I’ll win the popular vote…I don’t have any ideas that I can be a professional dancer.’

A Facebook group called ‘Vote Steve Wozniak on Dancing with the Stars’ has also popped up. I’m sure almost every other competitor has their own group as well, but it should be interesting to see how many ‘followers’ he can grab via the social networking mega-site. As I write this the group only has 9 members, so lets pump it up and give him our vote! You can learn more at VoteWoz.com. The site is coming soon, so in the meantime hit up the Facebook group above and join the group.

We all certainly wish the Woz nothing but the best. Hopefully he can stick around for more than a few weeks. Should be entertaining stuff.

My Kingdom for a 30″ Apple Cinema Display

On February 22, 2009, in Hardware, by Mr. Mayor

For years I’ve always wanted the behemoth 30″ cinema display for my office. I’ve worked on it many times in the past, and each time I sit down in front of it, my jaw drops just a bit in amazement of the size and desktop space it gives you. With recent news that Apple is dropping the 20″ cinema display, with the 30″ model more than likely to follow… one has to wonder two things:

  1. Will new back lit LED models be released in 20″ and 30″ sizes to join the already brand new 24″ model?
  2. Will this mean discounts on the old 20″ and 30″ cinema displays, or, will they actually go up in price due to their limited availability?

Hopefully I’m not alone in wanting a 30″ display at an affordable price. I have a feeling however that we will not see a drop in price for the soon-to-be discontinued 30″ models… and any new model that may be introduced will be worth a pretty penny for sure.
