Review: Screenium from Synium Software

From Synium Software, Screenium is a piece of software used to capture a video of your Mac’s screen, known as a “screen cast”. Screenium is an incredibly simple and easy to use application with lots of features, and I find it really fun. I haven’t actually used the application for anything productive yet, however I’ve had a lot of joy just playing around with it.

Screenium can capture videos in four modes; ‘full screen’ which will capture everything that happens on your whole screen; ‘fixed area’ which will only capture the goings-on in a selected area on the screen; ‘mouse area’ which will follow your mouse and record the area around it; and ’single window’ which will capture video from a selected window. You can also record sound from either the built-in microphone, an external microphone or even the system’s audio. This means that if you wish to add a soundtrack to your screen cast, you can play a song in iTunes and Screenium will record both the sound and picture.

Screenium can also use your Mac’s built-in or external iSight camera to record video.

Below is a very simple example I’ve made of Screenium in action. I’ve kept this video file quite small so that’s why the quality isn’t great.

Once you’ve made your screen cast, you can compress and re-size it any way you like and then export the video for editing in applications such as iMovie.

Screenium really is an easy to use application and I can’t see what more you’d want for screen casting. It’s packed full of features and I think is definitely worth the $20. For those of you who often produce tutorial videos for YouTube, this is just what you need.

Synium also offers some other great software that looks to be really useful, this can all be found on their website here.

For me this application earns an 8 out of 10!

App Store Hits 10,000 Apps

On June 11th 2008, Apple launched the App Store that would bring applications to both their iPhone and iPod Touch devices, with just 500 applications, 150 of which were free. (*Approximately 100 of which were flashlight apps). In just the first 30 days, Apple reported sales of a whopping $30 million.

The App Store was a huge success and developers everywhere wanted a peice of the cake. Now, months on, the App Store has hit 10,000 applications.

With a whole range of apps from games like Super Monkey Ball, Tetris and Cro-Mag Rally, to helpful utilities like Google’s Mobile App, Apple’s Remote and the eBay app, the App Store is a great place to find that app you need to customise and get the most out of your iPhone.

Why not let us know what your most favorite iPhone app is by leaving us a comment?

* This is just a joke!

iPhone Push Notifications Coming in 2.2.1?

It has been rumored that the iPhone push notification service, that the great Mr. Jobs promised for September just gone, is going to make an introduction in the 2.2.1 firmware, despite the fact that the 2.2.1 firmware beta hasn’t even been seeded to developers yet. RussianiPhone.ru claims they have seen the beta 1 of the future firmware and that the push service is present, as well as over-the-air MobileMe syncing with notes support.

Their proof is a screenshot of the iPhone ‘home’ screen with small red alert symbols, like those you get about the ‘Phone,’ ‘Mail’ or ‘SMS’ apps, over the ‘Calendar’ and ‘Notes’ apps, however how easy would it be to produce an image like this in Photoshop?

Considering Apple haven’t started to seed this beta yet, it’s hard to verify the claims of RussianiPhone.ru at this time, and if they have got their hands on a copy of the firmware, they obtained it outside of any official distribution.

Many iPhone users have been awaiting the push notification service as it will provide users with an alert for updates in applications that aren’t even running. For example, in the current iPhone firmware, if you are using an instant messaging app, you are required to keep the application open — closing the app would mean you would either be signed out of the messaging service, or, any incoming messages etc would go unnoticed until you opened that app again. With the push notification service, users will be able to exit an application on their iPhone but still receive an alert with any updates, just like you currently do with an incoming SMS, voicemail or e-mail.

Linux Comes to the iPhone

The incredibly talented iPhone-Dev Team have successfully got Linux running on the iPhone. They have used reverse engineering on the iPhone drivers to provide the option of two operating systems when booting the device — using “OpeniBoot” gives users the option of booting to Mac or Linux when they start their iPhones, much like Boot Camp on the Mac.

At present, there is still a lot of work to be done. The Dev Team have managed to get a command line running with input sent to the device over USB, however there is no support for the accelerometer, camera, audio, networking or even the touchscreen just yet.

The iPhone-Dev Team seem to have made the most progress on hacking the iPhone. They have produced excellent jailbreak & unlock software for many firmware versions of both the iPhone and the iPod Touch. With the progress made running Linux, the Dev Team aim to provide the ability of running Google’s Android OS on the iPhone, and they are currently looking for programmers to help with the project.

Review: mStand by Rain Design

After purchasing my new MacBook, I thought it was about time I started looking for decent a notebook stand. I’m always hunched over a laptop, and after a short period of time I get really uncomfortable. I started looking around for notebook stands and for a while I couldn’t find one I liked. That was until someone pointed me in the direction of Rain Design’s mStand.

The mStand is gorgeous. Made with aluminum it compliments the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros perfectly and looks great on your desk. With Apple’s wireless aluminum keyboard as well, it makes a fantastic looking computer set-up. The mStand is sleek, curvy, elegant and stylish. If Apple’s fantastic designers were to sit down and design a laptop stand, the mStand is what they’d come up with. It’s not big, bulky and heavy like many of the other notebook stands on the market.

A solid peice of aluminum is what makes the mStand and it’s extemely sturdy. Of all the notebooks stands I’ve tried, this is the most stable. Many notebook stands wobble or feel as if they’re going to give way under your machine at any moment. Considering the light weight of the mStand, it’s surprisingly sturdy and I have no worries about it toppling over or giving way.

There are small rubber pads on the bottom and the top of the mStand that will stop it from scratching both your desk or your notebook. They also provide some decent grip to stop the mStand slipping and sliding across a freshly polished desk.

The rear of the mStand has a hole cut out, just like the one in the iMac stand, that allows you to feed any wires through and keep them tidy. This is handy if you have external hard drives, iPhones, headphones and other things all feeding off of your notebook — instead of having them strewn all over your desk, they can be fed through the hole in the mStand and kept neat and out of the way.

As I’ve previously said, sitting hunched over a laptop for hours on end can really start to get uncomfortable. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had a stiff back after typing away on my MacBook for a few hours. However I’ve been sat at my desk all day now and I’m really comfortable. I’m not bent over, my MacBook’s screen is at eye-level and I’m really surprised how much of a difference just adding a stand can make.

If you’re looking for a stand for your notebook, I would definitely recommend the mStand. The mStand is compatible with other laptops as well, not just the MacBook/Pro and makes any desk look stylish and sophisticated.

I’m sat here now trying to think of ways I would change the mStand or ways in which it could be improved, however I just can’t think of any. Rain Design really have done a great job here and I would choose this stand over any other. As laptop stands go, I rate this 10/10!

Pangea Software iPhone/iPod Touch Apps Receive Black Friday Reductions

It seems the Black Friday sales reductions are also going on in the iTunes App Store — Pangea Software Inc have made some huge reductions to nearly all of their iPhone applications for one week only. Apps to receive reductions are:

Billy Frontier and Cro-Mag Rally are two of my most favorite games for the iPhone and I would definitely recommend purchasing them, especially at these prices!

Other noticeable iPhone apps to receive reductions, not made by Pangea include; Bejewelled 2 – now $2.99, Tetris – now $5.99, Scrabble – now $5.99, and Raging Thunder – now $3.99.

If you find some great iPhone/iPod Touch apps that have been reduced, please let us know.

Review: Marware Game Grip

You may remember a few weeks ago I did a post on the Marware Game Grip. Well I liked the idea of the Game Grip so much that I decided I’d try it out, and today it arrived.

First impressions of the Marware Game Grip upon opening is its quality — the unit feels strong and well made and I think if you were to throw it up the wall after conceding a goal in Real Football, it would probably survive. However I didn’t try it. This certainly isn’t a cheap gaming accessory you would find on eBay, this is built to last. Even the silicon grips on the side of the device and the silicon enclosures for the iPhone/iPod Touch are very strong. The enclosures can also be used as a stand-alone iPhone/iPod Touch case

I’ve had many silicon cases for my iPhone that haven’t been cheap but have certainly felt it. The silicon cases I’ve had felt thin, looked terrible and have all torn over time. However the Marware cases feel very tough and durable. They’re thick, but not too thick that they make your iPhone feel like a house-brick. This is high-grade silicon that I really don’t see tearing easily, and they look great.

The design is impressive too. The Game Grip is incredibly comfortable to hold and the grips on each side are soft and smooth. As I described in my previous post, after a long period of gaming on the iPhone, I find my hands become stiff and cramp up. However the Game Grip is so comfortable you can play for hours without any problems. It feels just like holding a controller for a games console. The silicon grips on the side also reduce the risk of dropping the Game Grip with your beloved gadget inside.

There’s no worry of your device slipping out of the Game Grip either. The iPhone fits snuggly inside when enclosed in the silicon case, and the iPod Touch will fit just as nice with the included spacer. I’ve shook it, smacked it and dropped it and my iPhone wouldn’t budge.

The unique cable management on the Game Grip really shows a lot of thought has gone in to this. You can plug the USB cord in to your device to stop your battery dying during play, and your headphones for better sound quality, and the Game Grip keeps them tidy and out of your way. The blue grips on the side can be pulled away and your wires are thread neatly underneath.

The Game Grip is also a fantastic accessory for simply watching a movie. I found the Game Grip can be stood up to act as a stand for your device or is comfortable enough to hold for the length of a movie. It also stops your fingers from getting in the way whilst you watch your favourite videos.

The Game Grip really is a great idea and it’s just what you need if you want to play games on your iPhone/iPod Touch without any discomfort. The only change I would make to the Game Grip would be to have some way to rotate your device and provide easier gaming for games that use a vertical screen. Just as I thought, Marware have really produced a great accessory here and it doesn’t disappoint. I give the Marware Game Grip 9 stars out of 10!

You can get the Game Grip from here for $44.99.

App of the Day: Cams Ahoy! Europe

How many times has a letter landed on your doormatt with a speeding fine enclosed? Sometimes, you don’t even remember passing a speed camera. Many of us have had expensive fines and points on our licence because we didn’t see the camera in time, or didn’t see it at all. Instead of splashing out way too much on a speed camera detector, why not just but Cams Ahoy! Europe for £0.59?

Cam Ahoy! Europe is an application for your iPhone 3G from ‘Betongkeps’. This handy little application will use your iPhone 3G’s built-in GPS to detect speed cameras whilst you’re driving. As you get closer to those dreaded cameras, the application will give you a sound alert with a picture and will tell you your distance from the camera.

The content loaded in to the application with details on speed camera locations is not user-generated — all of the information comes from www.scdb.info — the European Speed Camera Database. The application comes pre-loaded with over 22,000 camera locations from 32 countries throughout Europe and the advert on iTunes claims the information is over 99% accurate.

The application has been rated 4-stars at the time of writing this and all of the reviews describe how brilliant this app is, with most users saying that every camera they drive past is picked up by Cams Ahoy!

If you’re fed up with splashing out hundreds a year on speeding fines, why not give this app a try? At just 59 pence, there’s not much to lose.

Check out a video of the app here, or purchase from the iTunes Store here.

Apple Made to Drop iPhone Advert in UK

The UK advertising standards watchdog has banned an Apple advert for the iPhone 3G because they say people complained the advert was misleading with regards to the speed of the device. Apple’s advert, showing the iPhone 3G load news pages and Google Maps, both taking just fractions of a second to appear, repeatedly claimes the 3G is “really fast.”

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) recieved 17 complaints about the advert and said it must not appear again in the same form. It said the advert was likely to lead people to believe that the device actually operated at the speeds shown. The watchdog concluded: “because we understood that it did not, we concluded that the ad was likely to mislead.”

Apple UK had said that the advert’s claims were “relative rather that absolute in nature,” implying that speeds of the iPhone 3G were indeed “really fast” compared to those of its predecessor – the iPhone 2G. Apple also put a notice at the bottom of the advertisement that read: “Network performance will vary by location.”

Check out the US version of the advert here.

iPhone 3G Gift Card Now Available from Apple

Apple is starting to ramp up the holiday sales wagon. I can hear it idling in the garage out back.

Today I noticed that Apple has an iPhone 3G Gift Card up for offer for the holiday season. As Apple puts it:

Give someone an iPhone 3G Gift Card and when the lucky recipient comes in to redeem it, an Apple Retail Store Specialist will take care of every detail. The Specialist will get your recipient’s iPhone 3G up and calling, set up email, and help customize the Home screen, choose some great iPhone applications, personalize ringtones, and find favorite songs.

What a great idea. Buy the gift card, give it to that special someone… and all they have to do is take it to an Apple store, and a Genius will take care of the rest. The card purchaser can choose to add $25 all the way up to $2,500 onto the gift card. Any balance left over after purchase of the device can not be used against your monthly billing.

I should also note that the card is not valid at any AT&T locations. Recipients of the card will have to head into an Apple store, purchase it online, or make the order via telesales.

For full details, head on over to Apple.

Hmmmm… Kind of makes me wonder if we should be giving out iPhone 3G Gift Cards here at Mactropolis for the holidays? Sounds like the makings of a good contest to me….
