iPhone Apps

Netter\'s Neuroscience Flash CardsOk knowledge sponges, here comes another great app for the iPhone just released by the folks at Modality Inc. Netter’s Neuroscience Flash Cards helps you enhance your understanding of key neuroscience concepts. Really, it does.

Why would you want to do that? Well, if you are studying to become a brain surgeon it could be helpful… But for most of us, including me… I simply find the subject fascinating… And this app makes learning about the brain fun.

The app contains 225 individual illustrations taken directly from Netter’s Atlas of Human Neuroscience. You can move and pinch to zoom all of these images. Tap the images to test your knowledge of bones, vessels, joints and more.

There is even a cool study mode that lets you explore images at your own pace. When you’re done studying, enter quiz mode to see how much you know.

Netter’s Neuroscience Flash Cards is a truly unique app. Knowledge is power. If you want to learn more about the human brain and neuroscience… You might want to give this one a try.

iTunes

Apple has released iTunes 7.7.1 only a few days after the iPhone DRM might have been cracked. 7.7.1 weigs in a 48MB and is available via your Software Update or here at Apple. All that is mentioned by Apple on this update is that it includes fixes to improve stability and performance. Pretty vague, I know. At any rate, best to run the latest version. Give it a spin.

Are White iPhones Cracking?

Today and yesterday I read numerous reports of cracking in the white casing of the iPhone 3G. It isn’t just one unsubstantiated report, it’s numerous reports all over the place. Seems to be that only the white ones are cracking, it could be that the black iPhones because of their color make it harder to notice any flaws or cracks.

What say you out there? Have you or anyone you know witnessed strange cracking on your new white iPhone? Keep in mind, dropping or sitting on your iPhone doesn’t count. We’re talking about iPhones that show cracks simply from normal wear and tear. Although… with my 2G iPhone I sat and dropped the darn thing numerous times without any problems.

Perhaps the 3G iPhone isn’t as tough as the 2G?

MobileMe Service Gets Green Light... We Think.

Apple’s MobileMe service has been talking a beating over the past 3 weeks. Apple has now assured users that the service is fully operational. Mail issues have been resolved, including nagging Webmail and message history issues have been an issue for 1% of MobileMe subscribers.

If you are still experiencing e-mail problems, Apple has setup a dedicated chat line to assist and correct any further issues users might encounter. I think that’s the least they could do!

All this being said, an unrelated bug did appear on Monday which caused contact and calendar sync to break when connecting OTA from an iPhone or iPod Touch. This bug has since been fixed. Lets hope this is the last ‘bug’ to rear it’s ugly head… MobileMe is off to one heck of a bumpy start.

Super Monkey Ball Hacked

According to a few reports, Apple’s Fairplay DRM, which protects applications downloaded via iTunes… has been hacked. The method of hacking it has been around for awhile, but only recently was applied to Super Monkey Ball and distributed on the net. There are other reports however that claim they could not get the game to work, so whether this hack is legitimate or not is still up in the air.

To try for yourself, you’ll need to jailbreak your iPhone, and get SSH installed. This will allow you to transfer the game and play with permissions to get it to work. Bottom line, if you’re a casual or light tech newb, you might not want to give it a try. But if you know your way around XCode and the command line… You can probably make it work.

Trism for iPhone and iPod TouchNew from Steve at Demiforce LLC comes a great game for Bejeweled fans. It’s called Trism… And trust me, if you like Bejeweled, you’re going to love this one for many reasons. First, because it’s more fun… Second, because there are more gameplay options… and third… because it’s a lot cheaper! (Bejeweled 2 is currently $9.99 in the app store, while Trism is only $4.99)

Trism was built in the spirit of Tetris and Bejeweled, but put a whole new twist on it. Instead of the usual tetris like or bejeweled like shapes, in Trism you work with triangles (hence the name). There are 3 game modes, Classic, Timed and Puzzle… all of which are very challenging.

Along the way you can start completing different ‘achievements’. You don’t know what the achievements are, but when you unlock them you’ll get a little award… So keep pressing until you unlock them… There are 22 in all!

Perhaps the feature I liked the most about Trism is the online scoring. Complete a round and compare your scores to other players all around the world. Fine-tune your Trism skills to work your way up to the #1 spot! :)

iPhone Apps

My Life Record Family EditionWhen I first noticed this app it really caught my eye. ‘Wonder what this is?’ I thought… I was intrigued, and had to check it out.

Turns out that My Life Record Family Edition is an app that lets you manage your medical records… and more. The app claims to use Patent Pending technologies that enable you to maintain, view and organize your medical records on the iPhone or iPod Touch.

I can hear you saying ‘Ok, how the heck do you get your medical records into the software???’ A very good question… that was my first question as well. Turns out that My Life Record has an easy to use function that allows you to get your medical records from your doctor and into the app with ease. All you need to do is touch an icon within the app, and your iPhone will provide you with a fax number and code. Provide the fax number and code to your doctor, and all your doctor will need to do is print or write that code on the front of the fax and fax your chart. My Life Record will take the chart and tie it to your My Life Record profile, instantly creating an exact copy of your medical chart right on your device. If you’re worried about this being too much of a hassle for your physician, you shouldn’t be… This process is a simple fax, and he/she would have to do no more than he or she would wen giving your record to another physician for treatment or recommendations.

Privacy was a huge priority for the developers at Life Record. Information is never sold and industry standard encryption on your records is maintained. For more info on their privacy policy click here.

This is an insanely powerful tool to say the least. Having your medical record on hand, whenever you need it could be invaluable. Going on a long vacation to a far away place? Make sure you have your latest records in-hand, and off you go!

Apple News, iTunes

According to Macworld, Apple, Amazon and Real are competing to provide the infrastructure for the soon to launched MySpace Music store.

Although a decision is yet to be made, Amazon is said to be at the front of the pack.

MySpace Music will offer music from three major record labels, Sony BMG, Warner and Universal. The service is expected to make its bow in September. In addition to sales of DRM-free music, MySpace Music will likely also offer ring tones, concert tickets, merchandise and other memorabilia. The company seems prepared to work with a partner on the online music retail side, and the partner must be prepared to offer music from unsigned acts.

DRM-free music and unsigned acts aren’t really Apples thing, have to wait and see how this one works out.

OS X

Mac Cloners Must Be Thick...Seems that some just don’t get it. If you asking for a fight, your going to get a fight.

Yet another company is trying to sell Intel based PC’s that run Mac OS X. No it is not Psystar, a Florida clone maker that’s being sued by Apple. Open Tech is seeing PC’s that will run Mac OS X but aren’t being shipped pre-installed with Mac OS X. They say this is their way around Apple’s license agreement.

“We definitely would defend this,” said Open Tech’s spokesman Tom. “The only possible case that Apple can make, the only one that has any chance, would be based on the end-user licensing agreement.”

Open Tech is selling two computers which should easily run OS X.

Open Tech Home which includes; An Intel dual-core Pentium processor, 3GB of memory, an nVidia GeForce 8600 CT video card and a 500GB hard drive and the Open Tech XT which includes; An Intel Core 2 quad-core CPU, 4GB of RAM, an nVidia GeForce 8800 video card and a 640GB drive.

I would say go check out their website, but as of this moment its unavailable. Has Apple already gotten to Open Tech before they had the time to flourish?

Fun Stuff, Videos

So I just stumbled upon this hilarious video of John Mayer trying to help his father find Entourage in the Applications folder. The musician tried to guide his father through Mac OS X but had no such success. His father has absolutely no idea and confuses The Doc with a children’s show.

I do feel sorry for John though, doing tech support for family is always frustrating. That’s what Genius Bars are for!
