Aperture 2 World Tour Event at the Park Theatre in Winnipeg, Canada

Park Theatre in Winnipeg, CanadaI was fortunate enough to attend the Aperture 2 World Tour Event in Winnipeg, Canada yesterday at the Park Theatre. Having never used Aperture before (I’m not much of a photog) I was really curious to see what the software could do for a recreational photographer like myself. I wasn’t disappointed.

The seminar started slightly after 1:30 PM CST, and from there it was all info. Starting with an overview of what professional photographers were looking for and what recreational photographers were looking for, the presenter got down to what Aperture 2 can do and how to use it best.

New in Aperture 2 are a bunch of very useful features. Even to someone like me that hasn’t used the software before, as I watched the features being demonstrated, everything made sense.

First was the aggregation of the inspector elements. Now, all projects, metadata and adjustments are compiled into one handy area within the software. This makes it easy for you to access all of the projects and adjustments while making the most of your screen space.

Next, I appreciated how you could easily set the key photo for a project in the projects view. Simply click into a project and ctrl-click or hit the spacebar to set the key photo. Now, whenever you are browsing your projects in projects view, that photo appears as the thumbnail. This helps in making the project more recognizable at a glance.

The speed of Aperture 2 was impressive as well. At one point in the demo, the presenter opened up a project full of over 150,000 photos. In less than 30 seconds the project was ready, and he began leafing through them with lightning speed. Now, he was on a Mac Pro with 6GB of memory… but he assured us that most current versions of iMac and MacBook Pro’s would achieve the same speed and performance. I’d like to test that out for myself.

The Aperture 2 World Event at the Park Theatre, Winnipeg, CanadaLastly I was probably most impressed with the power of the editing tools and filters that could be applied to your images. For professional photographers I could see this software being a godsend. Applying color filters and effects was as easy as one click, and you can even work with multiple versions of the image at the same time, on one screen so that you can easily compare before and afters. You can even use a slider to divide the image in 2, and compare an effect on one side of the image, while the original remains the same on the other.

Nearing the end of the presentation we were pointed towards the Aperture website where it was noted we could find all kinds of video tutorials (around 50 or so) to get started. I checked them out a bit and indeed, the tutorials are very slick. If I pick up a copy I’ll be hitting up the site again for sure. Aperture 2 is currently selling for $199 in both the US and Canadian Apple Stores… and a free trial is available.

All-in-all I was very impressed with the presentation. There was NO hard selling of the product at all. Simply a 30 second blurb and slide about the price of Aperture 2 near the end of the presentation. The presentation was 99% walk through and solid content, with a touch of humor. Two thumbs up to Apple and all of the staff involved with the presentation. Great job!

Rogers Communications Confirms Canadian iPhone Coming This Year

Rogers Announces the iPhone is Coming to Canada in 2008Ok Canadians… can I get a w00t!??? It’s official, Rogers has announced that the iPhone will be coming to Canada this year.

In a brief statement, Rogers Chief Executive Ted Rogers announced:

“We’re thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year. We can’t tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned…”

Now we’re getting somewhere! With Rogers making an announcement like this, we know that they have obviously hammered out enough details with Apple that the release will be before the end of 2008. What should be very interesting to see is the rates that they offer. Data plans are notoriously expensive in Canada in comparison to unlimited plans found in the US. They iPhone could very well help bring down plan prices, not only for iPhone users, but hopefully for BlackBerry and other smartphone devices as well. I know there will be a collective thank you nationwide from all Canadians if the iPhone does indeed have a positive effect on data plan pricing. Lets hope for the best.

The New iMacs Have Arrived

The iMac Line has been Updated!

As reported last week, it was rumored that a newer iMac line would be launched this week. Well, right on cue (in fact, a little early) Apple has done just that. The new iMacs have been launched and they are bigger and more powerful than ever.

Faster CPU and GPU options are available. 2.4GHz or 2.66GHz are available on the 20″ model… and 2.8GHz and 3.06GHz are available on the larger 24″ model.

New graphics options are also available. You can choose between the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro (256 MB) or the NVidia GeForce 8800 GS (512MB) in the 24″ iMac. The 20″ model still has the ATI Radeon HS 2400 XT available… But if you fork out another $300 you can upgrade to an ATI HD 2600 Pro, another 260MHz and 70GB of extra hard drive space.

Pricing starts at $1,199 and $1,499 for the 20″ models, and $1,799 and $2,199 for the 24″ models. All systems still come standard with the good ‘ol Apple Remote

Mac vs. PC Commercials from the UK

Ok so I know you’re familiar with the Mac vs. PC commercials Apple has been running again and again… and again. I like ‘em… But just a few minutes ago I came upon the UK version of the same commercials. I’m not sure if it’s the accent, or what it is, but I like these ones much more. I do have a soft spot for British comedies, so I’m positive that has something to do with it.

At any rate, the video below is an aggregation of all UK commercials and it is roughly 8 minutes long. My favorite quote from the 3rd commercial, roughly 1:09 in:

‘This light grey area could represent shinanigans and tom-foolery, while this dark grey area could represent hijinks… and you see here we further divided hijinks into capers, monkey-business, and… just larking about’

Love it. Watch the vid below.

The Ultimate Remote Control for iTunes? The iPhone!

iControl Feature for iPhone Coming Soon?An anonymous tipster over at TUAW has reported that plans are in the works to enable iPhone to function as a remote for iTunes. The application is dubbed ‘iControl‘, and like the Apple TV remote and other remote controllers, it would allow the iPhone to connect wirelessly to iTunes libraries to browse and play media.

Frankly I can’t believe this hasn’t been setup already…But I’m glad to hear it is apparently coming! What a perfect remote the iPhone would make. No longer would you be stuck with the physical buttons found on the remotes that come with new systems, and the Apple TV.

While this is all wonderful, and I’m sure we’ll see it in action shortly… What I would absolutely love to see is some sort of app that allows me to use my iPhone as a universal remote control for all of my other electronic devices. TV, DVD Player, Home Entertainment System you name it. This has got to be a possibility, but until Apple start making televisions and dvd players, I wouldn’t expect Apple to build in such functionality…I’d sooner look to some enterprising 3rd party developers to come up with this one…

What other applications would you like to see the iPhone used for?

More Canadian iPhone Rumors: iPhone Coming to Rogers This Summer

iPhone Coming to Canada on Rogers This Summer?More rumors surrounding the iPhone in Canada have surfaced today, and this time it’s the Toronto Star that is fueling the rumor mill. In a report today, the Toronto Star is claiming that the iPhone could be in Canada some time this summer, between May and July.

Rumor has it that Rogers Communications (the only Canadian carrier with a compatible GSM network to accomodate iPhone) wants to include the iPhone as a part of a summer campaign featuring touch-screen phones.

The speculated release would put the iPhone in Canada right around the same time the new 3G iPhone is expected to drop. Could be great timing.

Said Elizabeth Hamilton, a Rogers spokesperson:

“We believe it is a phenomenal device and we look forward to being able to offer it to our customers if and when the device becomes available in Canada…”

Now that still sounds a little iffy and grey to me Elizabeth! C’mon, spill the beans to us would ya? I’m not surprised at the tight-lipped answer at all. I actually stopped a Rogers store out of curiosity few days back with some prodding questions about the iPhone. The 2 gentlemen at the store refused to answer any questions or give any help! I was actually kind of shocked because I’ve heard many stories of Rogers’ employees being very accommodating! ‘We don’t support the iPhone and I can’t help you with that’ was the exact response to one of my questions. I kind of chuckled and left it at that. Clearly I wasn’t going to get anywhere with them :)

I’ve heard and read so many rumors about the iPhone coming to Canada, I really don’t know what to believe anymore. All I know is that as time goes by, the release is inevitable, and one of these days the rumor is going to be true.

Rumored 3G iPhone Actually a Case

3G iPhone HoaxWell wouldn’t you know it, the rumors weren’t true on this one. I kind of had a feeling it wasn’t the 3G… and I think most of us would agree with that.

If you don’t recall, a while back we reported pictures of a rumored 3G iPhone that had surfaced. The pictures looked sketchy and details were dodgy at best, so we filed it under unsubstantiated rumors at the time.

Now, there is confirmation from the streets of Hong Kong that this is simply a case for the current generation of iPhone.

I’ll believe the 3G iPhone has arrived when I have one right here, in my own hands :)

Salesforce.com Switching to Mac?

Salesforce.com Switching to Mac?Salesforce.com, a huge corporation that develops CRM software may be making the switch from PC to Mac in the near future. Salesforce is currently signed up in an agreement with Dell, but as their licenses expire, their IT department is apparently planning for a switch over to Mac. Reasons for the switch are hazy, but one major factor is said to be security. Salesforce would rather pay the extra expense up front to purchase Mac systems, instead of paying insane costs to safeguard all of their Windows systems.

Salesforce is somewhat buddy/buddy with Apple already. They were on-board with Apple from the start with iPhone, and were even brought on stage at the iPhone SDK event some time back.

As per usual, this is just rumor and speculation at this point… But what a huge switch that would be. Could it be that we’ll see more and more large corporations making the switch to Mac, especially now that the iPhone has arrived on the enterprise scene?

Psystar Unveils Open Computers on YouTube

Psystar has uploaded a new video to YouTube, showing their Open Computers in action. One running Ubuntu, a second running Windows XP, and a third running OS X Leopard. A comment at the end of the video claims that the video was edited and created in Final Cut Studio, from a Leopard-enabled Open Computer.

At the very least this proves that Psystar can deliver on their claims… and the video does show some shots of the front of their office. One thing to note… On the front doors, note the words ‘not open to the public’. Ha! I guess not! Enjoy the video below.

New iMacs Coming Next Week?

iMac Update Coming Soon?In a tip sent to Geeksugar, a new upgrade in the iMac desktop line could be available as early as next week. The tip claims the new iMacs will keep similar price points but will have upgraded processors and potentially a new hard drive setup as well. This would mark the first round of changes to the current generation of iMacs since the aluminum design was unveiled last August.

The rumors are unsubstantiated at this point, but the rumor apparently came from the same source that was accurate in predicting the latest round of macbook refreshes.

Keep an eye open for this in the near future. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a refreshed iMac line in the Apple Store by next week.
